Hydrothermal aging mechanisms and service life prediction of twisted bamboo fiber wound composites

Jiangjing Shi et al.

Summary: Twisted bamboo fiber (TBF) wound composites produced through filament winding have great potential for lightweight and high-strength rotary structural components. This study examines the effects of hydrothermal aging on the microstructure, hygroscopic properties, and mechanical properties of TBF-NOL composites and predicts their service life. The results show that hydrothermal aging significantly affects the TBF/epoxy resin interface and temperature has a greater impact than humidity. The bending properties of TBF-NOL composites can be maintained at 40-50% for 5-10 years depending on the degree of exposure to hydrothermal environments. This research provides guidance for practical applications of TBF-wound composites.

Dual cantilever creep and recovery behavior of sisal/hemp fibre reinforced hybrid biocomposites: Effects of layering sequence, accelerated weathering and temperature

K. Senthilkumar et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of weathering on the creep behavior of sisal, hemp, and their hybrid composites was investigated. The results showed that the creep strain decreased with the addition of fibers. Weathering and elevated temperature conditions had a significant impact on the creep resistance of the composites. The creep resistance of the hybrid composites was found to be dependent on the layering sequence.

Summary: Studies show that flax fiber-reinforced composites have higher fatigue strength than glass fiber-reinforced composites. The hybrid material exhibits better performance in the high cycle fatigue range. In terms of static bending and impact characteristics, the hybrid material is significantly superior to flax and glass fiber-reinforced composites.

Advances in Natural-Fiber-Reinforced Composites: A Topical Review

H. Prajapati et al.

Summary: There has been a rapid growth in the research and employment of natural-fiber composites (NFCs) in recent years. NFCs have many advantages, such as biodegradability, eco-friendliness, low cost, and good mechanical properties. However, they also have some drawbacks, including difficulties in processing, high fiber moisture absorption, low impact strength, low durability, poor fire resistance, and poor compatibility between fibers and matrix. More research and exploration are needed to overcome these challenges.

Damping behavior of plant fiber composites: A review

Taiqu Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the damping characteristics of plant fiber composites (PFCs) compared to synthetic fiber composites (SFCs), highlighting the potential of PFCs to improve damping behavior in composite materials and structures. However, there are contradictory reports and gaps in knowledge regarding the damping behavior of PFCs. Some key points, such as mechanical property variability, hierarchical aspects, and sensitivity, are discussed.

Influence of the stress level and hygrothermal conditions on the creep/recovery behaviour of high-grade flax and hemp fibre reinforced GreenPoxy matrix composites

Benjamin Sala et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of stress level and hygrothermal conditions on the creep/recovery behavior of high-grade composites made from GreenPoxy, flax, and hemp fibers. The results show that strains increase with applied load and environment severity, with higher time-delayed strains in the creep phase than the recovery phase. Additionally, a stiffening effect is observed during the recovery phase.
