Carbonaceous electrode materials for supercapacitor: Preparation and surface functionalization

Yaokang Lv et al.

Summary: Supercapacitors have gained increasing importance in energy storage and conversion. Carbonaceous materials have been widely used as electrode materials due to their unique surface and electrochemical properties. This review summarizes the recent developments in supercapacitor electrodes made from carbonaceous materials, discussing their working principle and evaluation parameters. The preparation methods and electrochemical properties of different carbonaceous materials are compared and classified. It is suggested that surface modification and doping of carbonaceous materials can optimize their properties and introduce extra pseudocapacitance, and future work should focus on using carbonaceous materials derived from domestic, medical, and industrial waste residues.

Carbon-Based Materials for Supercapacitors: Recent Progress, Challenges and Barriers

Abdul Ghani Olabi et al.

Summary: Swift developments in electronic devices and future transportation/energy production directions have led to the need for new and contemporary devices with higher power capacities, longer cycle lives, and superior energy densities. Supercapacitors are promising devices with excellent power densities and long cycle lives; however, their commercially available counterparts suffer from inferior energy densities due to limitations in surface area and operating potential window. To address this issue, new high-capacity electrode materials and advanced electrolytes, such as ionic liquids, gel polymers, and solid-state electrolytes, have been developed and evaluated. This review provides a detailed discussion on different types of supercapacitors and the synthesis parameters that impact the physiochemical characteristics of carbon-based active materials. Additionally, the synthesis and applications of carbon nanotubes, graphene, and activated carbon are reviewed, followed by conclusions and outlook.

Carbon Aerogel-Supported Iron for Gasification Gas Cleaning: Tars Decomposition

Oscar Gomez-Capiro et al.

Summary: Tar removal from gasification gases is crucial for the feasibility of gasification-to-chemicals/energy systems. In this study, carbon-supported Fe catalysts were evaluated for tar decomposition using simulated gasification gases and tar model compounds, and the effects of temperature and CO co-feeding were investigated. The results showed that benzene had the highest activity for tar decomposition, and there was evidence of reversible elemental step for toluene and benzene over the Fe surface. The formation of FexOy resulted in a significant loss of activity, while the carbides remained stable and active.

Fast Pyrolysis of Cellulose and the Effect of a Catalyst on Product Distribution

Tanglei Sun et al.

Summary: Fast pyrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose was conducted using Py-GC/MS. The study analyzed the effects of temperature, time, and catalyst on the distribution of pyrolysis products. Results showed that temperature and time played a significant role in determining the type and yield of compounds produced. The optimal conditions for maximum volatile liquid yield were found to be a pyrolysis temperature of 500-600 degrees C and a pyrolysis time of 20 s. Different catalysts had varying effects on the composition of pyrolysis products, with K2SO4 yielding the highest content of alcohols, acids, and esters.
