Chemical Aspect of Displacive-Type Ferroaxial Phase Transition from Perspective of Second-Order Jahn-Teller Effect: NASICON as an Example

Takayuki Nagai et al.

Summary: In this study, a chemical guideline based on staggered polyhedral connectivity and the extension of the second-order Jahn-Teller (SOJT) theory was proposed to explore crystalline materials exhibiting ferroaxial order. It was demonstrated that ferroaxial phase transitions in NASICON systems occur only when SOJT interactions are symmetrically allowed. This guideline is not limited to NASICON systems and provides valuable insights into the exploration of displacive-type ferroaxial materials.

Crystal Structure of Na2V2(PO4)3, an Intriguing Phase Spotted in the Na3V2(PO4)3-Na1V2(PO4)3 System

Sunkyu Park et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanisms of phase transition in Na3V2(PO4)(3) upon nonequilibrium battery cycling and determines the structure of the intermediate Na2V2(PO4)(3) phase for the first time. The splitting of Na sites and symmetry reduction in Na2V2(PO4)(3) contribute to a fast phase transition, reducing lattice mismatch between different phases. This work lays the foundation for a better understanding of the high rate capabilities of Na3V2(PO4)(3).

Electrochemical Performance of NASICON-structured Na3-x V2-xTix(PO4)3 (0.0 < x < 1.0) as aqueous Na-ion battery positive electrodes

Milda Petruleviciene et al.

Summary: In this study, NASICON-structured Na3-xV2-xTix(PO4)(3) materials were successfully synthesized and shown to have improved charge capacity and cycling stability in aqueous Na-ion battery. The presence of titanium stabilizes the NASICON structure and its content directly affects the aqueous stability. The capacity loss in symmetric cells is caused by the capacity imbalance between positive and negative electrodes, mainly due to the oxygen reduction reaction catalyzed by Ti(III). Mitigation of this reaction can enhance the cycling stability of the battery.

Peculiarities of Phase Formation in Mn-Based Na SuperIonic Conductor (NaSICon) Systems: The Case of Na1+2xMnxTi2-x(PO4)3 (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 1.5)

Gustautas Snarskis et al.

Summary: In this study, a bifunctional Na-ion battery electrode system based on NASICON-structured Na1+2xMnxTi2-x(PO4)(3) was investigated to analyze its thermodynamic and phase formation properties. The results indicate finite thermodynamic limits of possible Mn concentrations in the system, primarily determined by phase separation into stable sodium ordered phases. The system does not exhibit solid solution behavior, instead phase-separating into sodium ordered monoclinic phases.
