A Phase-Field Model for In-Space Manufacturing of Binary Alloys

Manoj Ghosh et al.

Summary: The adhesion between particles and phases is crucial for the integrity of 3D printed metallic parts. We developed a phase-field model to study the solidification process of binary alloys, which can capture the microstructure with manageable computational costs. This model, tuned for Ni-Cu alloy feedstocks, satisfies stability conditions at all temperatures. Numerical simulations were conducted to analyze concentration distribution and partition coefficient under different interface velocities.

Sensitivity of additively manufactured AA7075 to variation in feedstock composition and print parameters

Kasra Momeni

Summary: The study developed a model for the LPBF process of AA7075 alloy considering feedstock composition and print parameters. Results showed that deviation in feedstock composition raises maximum temperature and melt pool size. Excess Cu content led to the largest melt pool dimensions. Increasing scan power resulted in higher peak temperature and larger melt pool. Lowering scan speed increased temperature rise time.

Engineering the Surface Melt for In-Space Manufacturing of Aluminum Parts

Kasra Momeni et al.

Summary: Aluminum alloys are favored for in-space manufacturing due to their lightweight and low melting temperature. The use of fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique for printing metallic parts poses challenges in terms of adhesion between particles. This study developed a phase-field model of surface melting and found that cylindrical particles exhibit a more disordered structure compared to spherical samples.

Multi-cycling nanoindentation in additively manufactured Inconel 625 before and after laser peening

Ali Tajyar et al.

Summary: This research implemented a room temperature multicycle nanoindentation technique to evaluate the effects of laser peening on the surface mechanical behavior of additively manufactured Inconel 625. It was observed that laser-peened specimens had higher resistance to penetration and lower permanent deformation. The pre-existing dislocation density induced by laser peening and the level of compressive stresses played key roles in improving the surface fatigue properties of the material.

Effect of differently oriented interlayer phases on the radiation damage of Inconel-Ni multimetallic layered composite

Shiddartha Paul et al.

Summary: Multimetallic layered composites (MMLCs) have great potential for applications under extreme environments due to their low oxidation tendency and high corrosion resistance. However, the understanding of the interface characteristics and the interaction with defects in MMLCs is still lacking. In this study, atomistic simulations were conducted on Inconel-Ni MMLCs to investigate the role of interlayer phases and their effect on defect mobility and radiation resistance. The results indicate that the misorientation angle of the interlayer influences the defect formation and radiation-induced material degradation.
