Contributions of executive functions and linguistic skills to verbal fluency in children

Priscila do Nascimento Marques et al.

Summary: This study examines the contribution of executive functions and linguistic skills to performance in verbal fluency tasks in children. The findings suggest that phonological awareness predicts performance in phonemic verbal fluency, while lexical access speed is the best predictor of performance in semantic verbal fluency. Working memory plays a role in phonemic and most categories of semantic verbal fluency, and planning is also recruited in the clothing category of semantic verbal fluency.

The Slow Development of Real-Time Processing: Spoken-Word Recognition as a Crucible for New Thinking About Language Acquisition and Language Disorders

Bob McMurray et al.

Summary: Words are fundamental to language, and understanding how lexical knowledge is acquired and processed is crucial for language development. Real-time measures of children's processing of familiar words reveal that word recognition skills develop slowly and can be characterized by changes in activation rate. In addition, language disorders may be linked to differences in competition resolution and deficits in inhibition.

Functional hearing quality in prelingually deaf school-age children and adolescents with cochlear implants

William G. Kronenberger et al.

Summary: This study found that youth with cochlear implants have poorer functional hearing quality compared to peers with normal hearing, and this is associated with speech-language and executive functioning outcomes in CI users. The Quality of Hearing Scale (QHS) is a valid measure of functional hearing quality that is distinct from traditional audiometric measures.
