Difference or Delay? Syntax, Semantics, and Verb Vocabulary Development in Typically Developing and Late-talking Toddlers

Sabrina Horvath et al.

Summary: The impact of syntactic and semantic properties on verb vocabulary development varies with age and language ability for toddlers, with differences between late talkers and typically developing children observed. Typically developing children were more likely to produce manner verbs, while late talkers were more likely to produce result verbs. Regardless of group, children who produced more manner verbs had larger verb vocabularies overall.

Optimising word learning in post-secondary students with Developmental Language Disorder: The roles of retrieval difficulty and retrieval success during training

Katherine R. Gordon et al.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate the relationship between retrieval difficulty and success during training and phonological precision of word production after a delay. Results showed that free recall training led to more precise word productions after the delay compared to cued recall training. Successful retrievals during training positively predicted retrieval after the delay, with the precision of the participants' final production and worst production of each word being the most significant predictors of production precision after the delay.

Word-learning trajectories influence long-term recall in children with developmental language disorder and typical development

Justin B. Kueser et al.

Summary: This study found that repeated spaced retrieval (RSR) supplemented with immediate retrieval trials during learning promotes long-term recall in children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and typical development (TD). Both groups of children showed linear growth during learning, with success on early immediate retrieval trials promoting success on subsequent spaced retrieval trials. Additionally, children's trial-by-trial RSR learning trajectories were related to their long-term recall, with cumulative success and growth over time on spaced retrieval trials positively predicting long-term recall. Consecutive success was also highly correlated with growth over time.

Repetition Versus Variability in Verb Learning: Sometimes Less Is More

Summary: This study found that 2-year-old children are better able to learn and understand the meanings of new verbs when presented in consistent linguistic contexts. Late talkers are more influenced by this linguistic context compared to typically developing children.

Summary: Researchers have found that repeated spaced retrieval activities can help children with developmental language disorders learn new words more accurately and efficiently. Studies have shown that this approach is effective in improving word recall in these children, with potential for being an effective intervention strategy.

Mapping Word to World in ASL: Evidence from a Human Simulation Paradigm

Allison Fitch et al.

Summary: Through studying American Sign Language using the Human Simulation Paradigm, it was found that referential clarity in sign language interactions is characterized by access to information about word class and referent presence (for verbs), similarly to spoken language. Iconicity is a cue to word meaning in sign language, although this is not always a fruitful cue. Moreover, verbs are highlighted well in the input of signed language, relative to spoken English.

Exploring the relations between child and word characteristics and preschoolers' word-learning

Elizabeth Burke Hadley et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that factors such as word characteristics, child's pretest vocabulary level, executive function skills, etc., can influence a person's learning of new vocabulary. Tailoring instructional strategies to better account for these factors may help support the learning of a variety of children and word types.

Word learning and verbal working memory in children with developmental language disorder

Emily Jackson et al.

Summary: The study found that children with DLD struggle with learning novel word forms and meanings, but are unimpaired in their ability to establish new form-referent links. The word learning deficit may be attributed to problems with encoding, rather than with retention, of new word knowledge. Additionally, an impaired ability to learn word forms may only be apparent in children with DLD and low levels of verbal working memory.
