Voice Onset Time Imitation in Teens Versus Adults

Jessamyn Schertz et al.

Summary: This study compares the imitation of sentences with shortened and lengthened voice onset time (VOT) between teens and adults, and finds that adults show better imitative ability. Both age groups demonstrate significant imitation of VOT manipulations in both directions.

Rhythm Perception, Speaking Rate Entrainment, and Conversational Quality: A Mediated Model

Camille J. Wynn et al.

Summary: Acoustic-prosodic entrainment, the tendency for individuals to align their speech behaviors with their conversation partner, plays a crucial role in successful interaction. This study explores the impact of rhythm perception on speaking rate entrainment and conversational quality. The results revealed a relationship between rhythm perception and speaking rate entrainment, and in unfamiliar conversation partners, speaking rate entrainment was related to conversational quality. These findings support the notion that rhythm perception is a component of acoustic-prosodic entrainment and contribute to understanding the mechanism by which rhythm perception deficits may affect conversational success in clinical populations.

Verbal entrainment in autism spectrum disorder and first-degree relatives

Shivani P. Patel et al.

Summary: The study found distinct patterns of prosodic and lexical entrainment in individuals with ASD, while subtler entrainment differences in prosodic and syntactic entrainment were identified in parents of autistic individuals. These results suggest that entrainment, particularly prosodic entrainment, is a key process linked to social communication difficulties in ASD and reflective of genetic liability to ASD.

It's alignment all the way down, but not all the way up: Speakers align on some features but not others within a dialogue

Summary: Alignment occurs at different levels within a given dialogue, with participants showing alignment on some features but not others. It is not a single phenomenon, but rather a constellation of loosely-related effects guided by communicative or social factors.

The developmental trajectories of executive function from adolescence to old age

Heather J. Ferguson et al.

Summary: The study found that working memory capacity continued to improve from adolescence through young adulthood, but working memory and inhibitory control started to decline from as early as 30-40 years old. Planning abilities showed improvement across adolescence and young adulthood, then declined across adulthood with a small positive change in older age. Cognitive flexibility displayed a dissociation with switch costs decreasing and mixing costs increasing across the lifespan.

Working memory differences in prosodic imitation

Caterina Petrone et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of individual differences in working memory on the accuracy of imitation of French prosody, finding that speakers with higher working memory capacities were more accurate in phonological imitation but not in phonetic imitation. The findings suggest that working memory constraints should be considered in modeling prosodic imitation.
