Alignment of PrEP use and sexual behavior over four months among men who have sex with men in the southern United States

Jeb Jones et al.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of using biweekly surveys to measure PrEP adherence and sexual behavior, and found that PrEP adherence was high but often overlapped with episodes of condomless anal sex. The method of conducting short, biweekly surveys on PrEP use and sexual behavior was found to be feasible and acceptable to MSM in the southern US.

HIV incidence after pre-exposure prophylaxis initiation among women and men at elevated HIV risk: A population-based study in rural Kenya and Uganda

Catherine A. Koss et al.

Summary: The study conducted in rural Kenya and Uganda showed that providing universal access to PrEP alongside community-wide HIV testing was associated with a lower HIV incidence among PrEP initiators compared to recent matched controls. The results indicated a significant reduction in HIV incidence among women who initiated PrEP, suggesting that PrEP may help bridge the gap in new HIV infections between men and women. Universal access to HIV testing, treatment, and prevention, including PrEP, could lead to a decrease in HIV incidence in generalized epidemic settings.

HIV PrEP is more than ART-lite: Longitudinal study of real-world PrEP services data identifies missing measures meaningful to HIV prevention programming

Jason Bailey Reed et al.

Summary: The study found that PrEP users often cycle on and off PrEP, with common early discontinuation and delays in obtaining additional prescriptions. Time off PrEP decreased with cycle number in all countries, suggesting the need for more nuanced measures to effectively assess PrEP use.

HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis for men who have sex with men in west Africa: a multicountry demonstration study

Christian Laurent et al.

Summary: The study on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in men who have sex with men (MSM) in West Africa showed that PrEP could effectively prevent HIV infection without increasing risky sexual behaviors or other sexually transmitted infections. Urgent implementation of PrEP in West Africa is recommended, with special attention to retention in care and PrEP adherence to ensure its full prevention potential.

Experienced barriers to adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention among MSM: a systematic review and meta-ethnography of qualitative studies

Alberto Edeza et al.

Summary: It was found that structural-level interventions, such as telehealth and pharmacist-prescribed approaches to PrEP distribution, may help circumvent barriers to uptake and adherence for some MSM, but may not be sufficient for already underserved communities, such as MSM of color. Furthermore, interpersonal-level factors, such as enacted PrEP stigma by providers and peers, emphasize the importance of considering social identity in the branding of PrEP for HIV prevention. Tailored interventions should consider experienced barriers to PrEP adherence across socioecological levels to be most effective.
