Assessing factors influencing students' perceptions towards animal species conservation

Heliene Mota Pereira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the perception of university students regarding different classes of wild vertebrates and the influence of social and educational factors on that perception. The results showed that perceptions varied according to gender, age, income, and study area. Therefore, environmental education, educational policies, and fauna conservation plans should consider diverse audiences and not only focus on charismatic species.

Social actors' perceptions of wildlife: Insights for the conservation of species in Mediterranean protected areas

Ainara Cortes-Avizanda et al.

Summary: This study found that hunters and animal husbandry workers had more knowledge of species compared to other social actors, and perception of functional groups varied between different social actor groups mainly due to the characteristics of the respondents. Interestingly, despite being globally considered endangered, steppe species were the least known and rarely perceived as emblematic by all social actor groups.

Understanding human attitudes towards bats and the role of information and aesthetics to boost a positive response as a conservation tool

Alex Boso et al.

Summary: Understanding human attitudes towards wildlife is crucial for the success or failure of conservation initiatives, with bats being a socially stigmatized group despite the ecosystem services they provide. Factors such as aesthetic appeal and previous experiences influence attitudes towards bats, and positive stimuli can reduce negative perceptions, highlighting the importance of public attitudes in achieving conservation goals.

What are the factors influencing the aversion of students towards reptiles?

Moacyr Xavier Gomes da Silva et al.

Summary: This study investigated students' aversion and non-conservationist attitudes towards different reptile species, finding that snakes were the most disliked. Biology students had lower aversion towards the three species, and students' recognition, handling skills, and previous experiences with educational animal exhibitions were negatively related to aversion. The visit to an educational exhibition contributed to reducing observed aversion, especially when combined with practical activities involving animal contact.

Conflicts between humans and crocodilians in urban areas across Brazil: a new approach to support management and conservation

Paulo Braga Mascarenhas-Junior et al.

Summary: The study identified common conflicts between humans and caimans in Brazilian cities, with most encounters happening during the wet season and rescues mainly carried out by environmental military police and fire brigades. Protocols were outlined for wildlife agencies to minimize animal stress and accidents during crocodilian rescues, highlighting the need for public policies to mitigate the negative effects of urbanization on wildlife.

Local community knowledge and perceptions in the Colombian Caribbean towards Amphibians in urban and rural settings: tools for biological conservation

Danny Vergara-Rios et al.

Summary: Human perceptions and knowledge about amphibians vary between rural and urban environments, influencing their ability to coexist with biodiversity. Socioeconomic factors play a crucial role in determining these differences and should be considered when designing conservation strategies. The study found that positive perceptions of amphibians differed between urban and rural areas, with varying levels of knowledge and beliefs among different demographic groups.
