Preoperative heart rate variability as a predictor of perioperative outcomes: a systematic review without meta-analysis

Mikkel Nicklas Frandsen et al.

Summary: This review examines the relationship between preoperative heart rate variability (HRV) and surgical outcomes, suggesting that HRV plays a clinically relevant role. However, further high-quality studies are needed due to methodological heterogeneity in the current literature.

Days alive and out of hospital after enhanced recovery video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy

Lin Huang et al.

Summary: Days alive and out of hospital (DAOH) is an important outcome measure that integrates hospitalization, readmissions, and mortality. This study investigated DAOH after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in an established enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program. The results showed that DAOH was reduced by an average of 6 days, with air leak, adjuvant chemotherapy, and recurrence being the main factors.

Reasons for staying in hospital after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery lobectomy

Lin Huang et al.

Summary: Despite a short median length of hospital stay (LOS) of 2 days after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) lobectomy, air leak, pneumonia, and pain remain the most important challenges for further improvement of the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program.

The Neuroimmune Response to Surgery - An Exploratory Study of Trauma-Induced Changes in Innate Immunity and Heart Rate Variability

Malin Hildenborg et al.

Summary: Surgery induces an inflammatory response that affects the brain and causes long-term cognitive impairment. Proper regulation of this immune response is crucial for successful surgical recovery. This study investigated the temporal immune response in surgical patients and its association with neuroimmune regulatory pathways and cognition. The results showed that individual pre-operative heart rate variability (HRV) generates different response patterns that are related to changes in inflammation following surgery.
