OpenBuildingControl: Digitizing the control delivery from building energy modeling to specification, implementation and formal verification

Michael Wetter et al.

Summary: The current process of specifying, installing, and commissioning building control sequences is manual and lacks formal quality control, resulting in low performance sequences at scale. To address this, a digitized building control delivery workflow with formal verification and a Control Description Language was introduced to allow customization, testing, and improvement of sequences by mechanical designers. This process has led to a proposed standard, ASHRAE 231P, for digitizing the building control delivery process through a standardized format for exchanging control logic.

Simulation-based performance evaluation of model predictive control for building energy systems

Sen Huang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the combined impacts of selected time intervals for model discretization and control sampling on the performance of model predictive control through detailed simulations for the first time. The time interval for model discretization has a greater influence on the control performance than that for control sampling, affecting prediction performance, cost saving, and computation time. The proposed simulation-based performance evaluation emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate time intervals for practical applications of model predictive control in building energy management.

Energym: A Building Model Library for Controller Benchmarking

Paul Scharnhorst et al.

Summary: Energym is an open-source library based on Python, designed for testing and benchmarking building controllers. The library includes building models with explanations of their functions, locations, and technical equipment, as well as features such as standardized evaluation scenarios and key performance indicators (KPIs). Calibration methodologies are described for constructing the models, with usage illustrated through examples.

What are the impacts on the HVAC system when it provides frequency regulation? - A comprehensive case study with a Multi-Zone variable air volume (VAV) system

Xing Lu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the impact of providing secondary frequency regulation (FR) service on HVAC system performance and controls. The study shows that with appropriate regulation capacity determination, FR has little or no impact on HVAC operation and occupant thermal comfort. Overestimating regulation capacity can affect the quality of FR service and HVAC energy efficiency.
