Column Generation Based Service Function Chaining Embedding in Multi-Domain Networks

Summary: Network function virtualization (NFV) achieves cost-effective network service provisioning by decoupling network functions from dedicated hardware. Service function chaining (SFC) is used to steer traffic flow through a specific order of network functions hosted by cloud computing. This article proposes a new optimization algorithm, along with two heuristic algorithms, to solve the SFC embedding problem in multi-domain networks. Numerical validation shows that the acceptance ratio of the heuristic algorithms is close to the optimal algorithm.

On Using Physical Programming for Multi-Domain SFC Placement With Limited Visibility

Summary: Service Function Chaining (SFC) is a networking concept that steers traffic through an ordered set of functions to provide end-to-end services. It is a facilitating technology for 5G, enabled by Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Software Defined Networks (SDN). In multi-domain scenarios, SFC placement encounters challenges due to limited visibility and new requirements brought by 5G use cases. This article proposes a centralized framework for SFC partitioning and embedding over multiple domains with limited visibility. The framework utilizes Physical Programming method to model the multi-objective placement problem and presents both an exact algorithm and a scalable heuristic solution. Extensive evaluation validates the effectiveness of the proposed solution with limited network visibility.
