Summary: Given the high rates of mental health problems and poor service access among youth in war-affected countries throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, incorporating evidence-based mental health interventions into alternative delivery platforms could improve service access in these settings. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of implementing the Youth Readiness Intervention (YRI) within an employment promotion program (EPP) and its effects on mental health outcomes. The findings suggest that integrating the YRI into the EPP is feasible and acceptable, and shows promising trends in reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms and emotional regulation difficulties among male participants.

Racial discrimination and 12-month and lifetime anxiety disorders among African American men and women: Findings from the National Survey of American Life

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations between racial discrimination and 12-month and lifetime DSM-IV anxiety disorders in African American men and women. The results showed that racial discrimination was associated with increased odds of anxiety disorders, agoraphobia, and panic disorder among men. Among women, racial discrimination was associated with increased odds of anxiety disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. These findings suggest the need for interventions to address gender disparities in anxiety disorders.

Challenges and opportunities for implementation and dissemination of a task- sharing counselling intervention for depression at primary health care level in South Africa

Summary: The aim of this study was to understand the factors contributing to the implementation and dissemination of a lay-counselling service for depression at primary healthcare level. Facilitators identified include supervision and support for counsellors, person-focused counselling approach, and organizational integration of the service. Barriers included lack of organizational support, high counsellor turnover, and lack of an identified cadre to deliver the intervention.

Toward measuring effective treatment coverage: critical bottlenecks in quality- and user-adjusted coverage for major depressive disorder

Decision-makers need to increase the utilization and quality of pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy.

To bridge these gaps globally, task shifting and telepsychiatry should be made available and maximized, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Task shifting to nonspecialist health workers has become the most viable strategy to improve essential mental health coverage and efficient use of available resources and technology.
