Nanovesicles containing curcumin hold promise in the development of new formulations of anti-Acanthamoebic agents

Balsam Qubais Saeed et al.

Summary: The study revealed that curcumin-loaded nanovesicles showed enhanced anti-Acanthamoebic effects compared to curcumin alone. Both curcumin and curcumin-loaded nanovesicles exhibited minimal cytotoxic effects against human cells at all tested concentrations. These findings suggest that curcumin-loaded nanovesicles have the potential to be a promising new formulation for anti-Acanthamoebic agents.

Curcumin induces autophagic cell death in human thyroid cancer cells

Li Zhang et al.

Summary: Curcumin significantly inhibits the growth of thyroid cancer cells by inducing autophagy through activation of the MAPK pathway and inhibition of the mTOR pathway. It exerts selective cytotoxicity on thyroid cancer cells without affecting normal epithelial cells, suggesting that inducing autophagic cell death may serve as a potential anti-cancer strategy for thyroid cancer.

Vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) prediction for dimethyl ether (DME) and water system in DME injection process with Peng-Robinson equation of state and composition dependent binary interaction coefficient

Maojie Chai et al.

Summary: This study proposes a combination of activity coefficients and linear solvation energy relationship (LSER) to address the deviation between idealized models and actual solubilities, resulting in more consistent results. Concentration-dependent binary interaction coefficients are proposed in asymmetric phase systems to represent intermolecular forces, and partitioning coefficients are discussed from the perspective of intermolecular forces, providing insights into non-ideal phase behavior.

Immunomodulatory effects of curcumin in systemic autoimmune diseases

Sajjad Chamani et al.

Summary: Systemic autoimmune diseases are characterized by immune system dysregulation, leading to immune cell activation, inflammation, and multi-organ impairment. Curcumin, a phenolic ingredient extracted from turmeric, has various functions such as inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress. However, its immunomodulatory effects on immune reactions/processes are still largely unknown.

Effect of Drying Methods and Processing Conditions on the Quality of Curcuma longa Powder

Sandra M. Llano et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different drying methods and packaging materials on the quality of turmeric powder. The results showed that convection and fluidized bed drying had no significant impact on the quality, while solar drying caused degradation. Aluminum bag was effective in preventing deterioration caused by UV radiation. Temperature range used in fluidized bed drying did not affect the curcuminoid content and antioxidant capacity of turmeric powder.

Wahyudiono et al.

Summary: Curcumin-loaded liposomes were prepared using a supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2)-ultrasound environment system. The operating conditions influenced the size of liposome products and the encapsulation efficiency of curcumin. This innovative method does not require organic solvents and is practical for generating liposomes.

Hop (Humulus lupulus L.) Essential Oils and Xanthohumol Derived from Extraction Process Using Solvents of Different Polarity

Katja Bizaj et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the content of essential oils and prenylated flavonoid Xanthohumol in extracts of Slovenian hops, and compares the extraction efficiency using fluids of different polarity. The results show that dimethyl ether is the most effective solvent for extracting Xanthohumol, while the content of essential oils in propane extracts is similar to that in dimethyl ether extracts.

Summary: The study found that bicelles formed using Labrasol (R) and Tween 80 significantly improved the oral delivery of curcumin, showing better dissolution and ex vivo permeation compared to liposomes and drug suspension. However, mixed micelles formulations exhibited superior performance in all aspects.

Ethanol-free extraction of resveratrol and its glycoside from Japanese knotweed rhizome by liquefied dimethyl ether without pretreatments

Hideki Kanda et al.

Summary: Using DME as a solvent for extracting polyphenol resveratrol and piceid from raw Japanese knotweed yielded better results compared to conventional ethanol extraction, without the need for drying and cell wall disruption. The Hansen solubility parameters of DME are closer to ethanol than water, making it suitable for extracting antioxidants from raw plant material. This method also allows for efficient extraction of water and organic extracts from the raw Japanese knotweed.

Enhancing the stability of zein/fucoidan composite nanoparticles with calcium ions for quercetin delivery

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, composite nanoparticles based on zein and fucoidan were prepared, and the effects of different calcium ion concentrations on the stability of the system loaded with quercetin were investigated. It was found that the addition of Ca2+ improved the release of active substances from the nanoparticles, especially at a concentration of 1.5 mM. This suggests potential applications for these composite nanosystems in delivering active substances.

Curcumin and inflammatory bowel diseases: From in vitro studies to clinical trials

Farzaneh Fallahi et al.

Summary: Inflammatory bowel diseases may result from mutations in genes encoding for innate immunity, requiring multi-targeted treatment options. Curcumin, a natural compound known for its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, has shown therapeutic potential against IBDs in both preclinical and clinical studies. Clinical trials have demonstrated the efficacy of curcumin in different dosages, and improvements in oral bioavailability and absorption through nanotechnology may enhance its effectiveness for IBD treatment.
