Dynamic Reversible Evolution of Solid Electrolyte Interface in Nonflammable Triethyl Phosphate Electrolyte Enabling Safe and Stable Potassium-Ion Batteries

Shunping Ji et al.

Summary: Potassium-ion batteries (PIBs) are a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) for large-scale electrochemical storage devices due to the abundance of potassium resources. However, PIB electrodes typically have low capacity and poor cyclic stability, as well as safety concerns. In this study, zinc phosphide composites are designed as PIB anodes in a nonflammable triethyl phosphate (TEP) electrolyte to address these issues. The optimized composite shows high specific capacity and excellent cycling performance, attributed to reversible dynamic evolutions and conversions of sulfur-containing species in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI).

Summary: Researchers have designed an interfacial layer to precisely regulate the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) of lithium (Li) metal anodes, improving their stability and cycling performance. The interfacial layer accelerates the decomposition kinetics of fluorinated salts in the electrolyte and forms a LiF-enriched SEI film. The experimental results show that batteries with this interfacial layer have a longer cycling lifespan and enhanced cyclability.

Identification of LiH and nanocrystalline LiF in the solid-electrolyte interphase of lithium metal anodes

Zulipiya Shadike et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) composition is crucial for developing high-energy batteries based on lithium metal anodes. This study used synchrotron-based X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis to identify and differentiate two elusive components, LiH and LiF, in the SEI of lithium metal anodes. The presence of LiH in the SEI was confirmed, with discussion on the possibility of its misidentification as LiF in the literature. The study also found that LiF in the SEI has different structural features from LiF in the bulk phase, which favor Li+ transport and make it a favored component for the SEI.
