Anti-Corrosive SnS2/SnO2 Heterostructured Support for Pt Nanoparticles Enables Remarkable Oxygen Reduction Catalysis via Interfacial Enhancement

Zijie Lin et al.

Summary: A novel SnS2/SnO2 hetero-structured support is reported for Pt nanoparticles as the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst, with Pt NPs mainly deposited at the interfaces of SnS2 and SnO2 moieties. The Pt-support interactions, tuned by the concentration of the heterointerfaces, enhance electronic transfer and enrich electron density of Pt, resulting in improved ORR activity and stability. Density functional theory calculations reveal the higher binding energy and migration barrier of Pt on the SnS2/SnO2 heterojunction, accounting for the outstanding stability of the catalyst.

Stabilizing Pt Electrocatalysts via Introducing Reducible Oxide Support as Reservoir of Electrons and Oxygen Species

Liting Yang et al.

Summary: This study addresses the degradation issue of Pt-based catalysts by employing intelligent catalyst design. By introducing Nb2O5 as a reservoir, the Pt-Nb2O5 catalyst exhibits excellent stability even at high voltages, thanks to the corrosion resistance of Nb2O5 and strong metal-support interactions.

Challenges in applying highly active Pt-based nanostructured catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions to fuel cell vehicles

Kensaku Kodama et al.

Summary: Progress has been made in the development of Pt-based nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction over the past 30 years, with some now in commercial production for PEFCs. However, further improvements in catalytic activity are needed. State-of-the-art catalysts have potential to enhance energy conversion efficiencies and reduce platinum usage in PEFCs, but technical challenges remain for their application in fuel cell vehicles, such as high power density, practical durability, and efficiency.

Precursor modulated active sites of nitrogen doped graphene-based carbon catalysts via one-step pyrolysis method for the enhanced oxygen reduction reaction

Xiaoran Zhang et al.

Summary: Tuning active configurations of different nitrogen species in N-doped carbon materials is crucial for developing efficient metal-free catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction. By modulating N active species in graphene structured N/C with specific precursors, materials with specific N configurations such as N/C -NP + NG, N/C -NP + NP and N/C -NP + NPY have been successfully synthesized and characterized. Electrochemical results show that N/C -NP + NG exhibits the best ORR performance, comparable to conventional Pt/C, while N/C -NP + NPY shows the lowest activity.
