States of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for CO oxidation below room temperature

Elena M. Slavinskaya et al.

Summary: Pt/CeO2 catalysts were characterized under reductive and oxidative pre-treatments and CO oxidation reaction conditions. Metallic Pt particles were found to be precursors for the formation of more stable PtOx particles that exhibit catalytic activity for CO oxidation below room temperature. These findings highlight the complex response of catalytic materials to reaction conditions and suggest potential strategies for improving Pt/CeO2 and similar catalysts.

Stability of Pt-Adsorbed CO on Catalysts for Room Temperature-Oxidation of CO

Frederic C. Meunier et al.

Summary: Operando diffuse reflectance FT-IR spectroscopy often detects overlapping signals between gas-phase CO and adsorbates when studying catalysts. Removing CO(g) physically may result in a rapid decay of adsorbate signals. Our study shows that carbonyls adsorbed on metallic Pt sites disappeared completely within 10 minutes at 30 degrees C upon removing CO(g) when using redox supports. However, a broad band assigned to CO adsorbed on oxidized Pt sites remained stable.

Redox dynamics of platinum species on CeO2 during CO oxidation reaction

Mingzhi Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores the chemical states and dynamics of several typical Pt species in CO oxidation reaction and their correlations with activity. Pt-O-Ce species remained in the ionic state during the light off reaction, while PtOx species could be easily reduced to metallic Pt, which exhibited better activity due to the enhanced reducibility of the Pt-CeO2 interface.

Synergy between Metallic and Oxidized Pt Sites Unravelled during Room Temperature CO Oxidation on Pt/Ceria

Frederic C. Meunier et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that metallic and oxidized Pt exist in similar proportions on the surface of nanoparticles at 30 degrees C under reaction conditions. The metallic Pt phase provides strong adsorption sites for CO, while the oxidized Pt phase supplies reactive oxygen, enabling a synergy between these phases.

Atomic level fluxional behavior and activity of CeO2-supported Pt catalysts for CO oxidation

Joshua L. Vincent et al.

Summary: This study used electron microscopy to observe the structural dynamics occurring at and near Pt/CeO2 interfaces during CO oxidation, showing that catalytic turnover frequency correlates with fluxional behavior. This behavior destabilizes supported Pt particles, enhances oxygen vacancy creation and annihilation rates, leads to increased strain and reduction in CeO2 support surface.

Interface dynamics of Pd-CeO2 single-atom catalysts during CO oxidation

Valery Muravev et al.

Summary: In this study, two Pd/CeO2 single-atom catalysts for low-temperature CO oxidation were compared, revealing the impact of preparation method on their stability. Detailed in situ characterization linked the stability of the Pd single atoms to the properties of the Pd-CeO2 interface. Understanding such metal-support interactions is crucial for the rational design of stable single-atom catalysts.
