Role of metal identity and speciation in the low-temperature oxidation of methane over tri-metal oxo clusters

Jacklyn N. Hall et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the impact of metal identity and oxidation state on redox and acid-catalyzed reactions, showcasing the importance of using well-defined polymetal clusters in metal organic framework materials like MIL-100(M). The research reveals the mechanisms behind low temperature oxidation of methane and the determining role of water and methanol in maximizing C2 oxygenate selectivity.

Thermal Treatment Effect on CO and NO Adsorption on Fe(II) and Fe(III) Species in Fe3O-Based MIL-Type Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Density Functional Theory Study

Jenny G. Vitillo et al.

Summary: The properties of MOFs based on Fe3O metal nodes are influenced by the efficiency of solvent and counteranion removal by postsynthetic thermal treatment. Temperature, time, and reaction environment play a significant role in modifying key features of the materials, such as the number of open metal sites and the reduction of Fe(III) centers to Fe(II).

Beyond Radical Rebound: Methane Oxidation to Methanol Catalyzed by Iron Species in Metal-Organic Framework Nodes

Matthew C. Simons et al.

Summary: Recent work has shown that MOFs can isolate metal sites mimicking enzymes to catalyze selective oxidations at low temperatures, offering new pathways for the valorization of underutilized feedstocks like methane. It has been demonstrated that protecting the desired product CH3OH in MOFs requires steps beyond the radical-rebound mechanism, with further transport and dehydration steps necessary to prevent overoxidation. The selectivity-controlling steps involve both chemical and physical rate phenomena, providing a strategy to mitigate overoxidation in these systems.
