Caffeic acid phenethyl ester suppresses intestinal FXR signaling and ameliorates nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by inhibiting bacterial bile salt hydrolase activity

Xian-Chun Zhong et al.

Summary: The study found that caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) can improve obesity-related fatty liver disease (NAFLD) by inhibiting bacterial bile salt hydrolase (BSH) activity in the gut, suggesting that propolis enriched with CAPE may serve as a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment of NAFLD.

Gut microbiota-bile acid crosstalk contributes to the rebound weight gain after calorie restriction in mice

Mengci Li et al.

Summary: This study found that caloric restriction reduces the abundance of Parabacteroides distasonis in the gut and alters serum bile acid profile, which contributes to weight regain. Treatment with Parabacteroides distasonis or non-12 alpha-hydroxylated bile acids can ameliorate weight regain through increased thermogenesis.

Hepatocyte pyroptosis and release of inflammasome particles induce stellate cell activation and liver fibrosis

Susanne Gaul et al.

Summary: The study found that hepatocyte pyroptosis, caused by NLRP3 inflammasome activation, leads to the release of inflammasome proteins and exacerbates fibrogenesis. Inhibition of caspase-1 and gasdermin D activation can prevent pyroptosis. The released inflammasomes are taken up by hepatic stellate cells, promoting inflammation and fibrosis. These findings suggest a novel mechanism for liver injury and potential therapeutic targets for chronic liver diseases.

Influence of Polysaccharides From Polygonatum kingianum on Short-Chain Fatty Acid Production and Quorum Sensing in Lactobacillus faecis

Min Yang et al.

Summary: The study focused on the regulation of polysaccharides from Polygonatum kingianum (PS) on Lactobacillus faecis, a specific probiotic in the intestinal tract, and found that PS promoted the biomass, biofilm, and acetic acid production in L. faecis. Through genomics approaches, it was discovered that L. faecis 2-84 encoded genes related to quorum sensing (QS) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and transcriptome and proteome analysis showed that PS could promote the QS system of L. faecis. PS also regulated the production and metabolism of SCFAs in L. faecis by influencing the expression of specific genes and proteins. Ultimately, the study suggested that PS might play a role in promoting the growth of intestinal probiotics through affecting the QS system and SCFAs production.
