Topologically protected optical polarization singularities in four-dimensional space

Christina M. Spaegele et al.

Summary: Optical singularities are widely used in modern optics for applications such as structured light, superresolution microscopy, and holography. In this study, we demonstrate a complete and topologically protected polarization singularity that is created in the focus of a cascaded metasurface-lens system. This singularity, located in a four-dimensional space, opens up possibilities for unconventional applications in topological photonics and precision sensing.

Generation of V-point polarization singularity array by Dammann gratings

Jawahar Desai et al.

Summary: A novel method for designing Dammann gratings is proposed in this paper, which is then experimentally validated. By solving an optimization problem, the throughput is maximized, and the topological features of the incident light are preserved in the diffracted orders of the grating.

No general relation between phase vortices and orbital angular momentum

M. Berry et al.

Summary: Simple superpositions of Laguerre-Gauss beams highlight the difference between the component of orbital angular momentum in the propagation direction and the total topological charge. The examples demonstrate the contrasting situations where either the orbital angular momentum is zero but the total charge is not, or vice versa.

Creating and moving nanoantenna cold spots anywhere

Alex J. Vernon et al.

Summary: We demonstrate a method to create and move sub-wavelength cold spots by manipulating the polarization, amplitude, and phase of plane waves. By exploiting the cancellation between scattered light and far-field illumination near a nanoantenna, we can create a zero-magnitude and highly sub-wavelength cold spot around a nanoantenna of any shape. This technique has potential applications in nanoscale sensing.

Simple, passive design for large optical trap arrays for single atoms

P. Huft et al.

Summary: In this paper, we present an approach for trapping cold atoms in a two-dimensional optical trap array generated without any active device. The design allows for the formation of arrays of bright or dark traps, or both simultaneously, and solves the problem of out-of-focus trapped atoms in periodic optical lattices. The experimental results demonstrate the successful creation of a 2D array of 1225 dark trap sites and the near perfect removal of Talbot plane traps using a high power yet low cost laser.

A High Aspect Ratio Inverse-Designed Holey Metalens

Soon Wei Daniel Lim et al.

Summary: This study introduces an alternative metasurface geometry based on high aspect ratio via-holes, designing and characterizing metalenses that focus incident infrared light into a diffraction-limited spot. By engineering both transmitted phase and amplitude profiles simultaneously, the impedance match between the incident and transmitted waves is improved, leading to increased focusing efficiency. The holey platform enhances the accessible aspect ratio of optical nanostructures while maintaining mechanical robustness, paving the way for a generation of high aspect ratio ruggedized flat optics.

Efficient generation of optical bottle beams

Yuzhe Xiao et al.

Summary: This study introduces optical bottle beams for trapping atoms and small particles with low-index, comparing traps obtained by three different methods using a figure of merit (FoM). By utilizing an optimization algorithm, optical bottle-beam traps based on Gaussian beam illuminating a metasurface are identified to have superior power efficiency. A numerical demonstration using a silicon metasurface for creating an optical bottle-beam trap is provided.
