Nature of the Active Sites of Copper Zinc Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

Shiyu Zhen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a large-scale simulation to obtain realistic CuZn nanoparticle models and the atomic structure of active sites for C2+ products on CuZn catalysts in CO2ER. Two kinds of active sites, both facilitating C-C coupling, are identified and verified through subsequent calculations and experiments. This work provides a paradigm for the design of high-performance Cu-based catalysts and a general strategy to accurately identify the atomic structures of active sites in complex catalytic systems.

Mechanistic Insights into OC-COH Coupling in CO2 Electroreduction on Fragmented Copper

Kaili Yao et al.

Summary: The formation of carbon-carbon bonds plays a crucial role in the electroconversion of CO2 into high-energy-density C2+ products. Through computational and experimental studies, it has been revealed that the coupling of *CO with *COH, rather than CO dimerization, is favored on low-coordinated copper sites. These findings provide important mechanistic insights and demonstrate the potential for designing efficient materials for C2+ production from CO2 reduction.

CO2 electrolysis to multicarbon products in strong acid

Jianan Erick Huang et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide electroreduction (CO2R) is being actively studied as a promising route to convert carbon emissions to valuable chemicals and fuels. A study found that concentrating potassium cations in the vicinity of electrochemically active sites accelerates CO2 activation to enable efficient CO2R in acid. The research achieved a high CO2R efficiency on copper at pH <1 with a single-pass CO2 utilization of 77%.
