FtsZ-mediated fission of a cuboid bacterial symbiont

Philipp M. Weber et al.

Summary: This research reveals the reproductive mechanism of a cube-like gammaproteobacterium called Candidatus Thiosymbion cuboideus on marine nematodes. The study shows that the symbiont cells are host-polarized and the tubulin homolog FtsZ plays a significant role in the division process.

Evolution of longitudinal division in multicellular bacteria of the Neisseriaceae family

Sammy Nyongesa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of cell shape, multicellularity, and division mode within the Neisseriaceae family by using genomic, phylogenetic, and microscopy techniques. The researchers discover that certain bacteria within the Neisseriaceae family can divide longitudinally, and identify genes and alleles associated with multicellularity and longitudinal division. The findings shed light on the evolutionary mechanisms of multicellularity and longitudinal division in bacteria.

Benchmarking the ideal sample thickness in cryo-EM

Michael W. Martynowycz et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the relationship between sample thickness and data quality using MicroED, revealing that structures can be reliably determined from crystalline lamellae up to twice the inelastic mean free path. Lower resolution diffraction was observed at three times the mean free path for all three accelerating voltages, but insufficient data quality prevented structure determination. No coherent diffraction was observed from lamellae thicker than four times the calculated inelastic mean free path, setting an ideal specimen thickness benchmark for cryo-EM methods.

Interactive Tree Of Life (iTOL) v5: an online tool for phylogenetic tree display and annotation

Ivica Letunic et al.

Summary: The Interactive Tree Of Life is an online tool for displaying, manipulating, and annotating phylogenetic and other trees. The latest version 5 introduces a new tree display engine and several new features, such as a new dataset type and expanded annotation options. Users can now also manually annotate trees by hand, providing more flexibility and control.
