Multifunctional resonant wavefront-shaping meta-optics based on multilayer and multi-perturbation nonlocal metasurfaces

Stephanie C. Malek et al.

Summary: We experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces that provide both spatial and spectral control over light, focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance. We also realize a versatile platform for multispectral wavefront shaping, applicable in augmented reality and transparent displays.

Engineering Bound States in the Continuum at Telecom Wavelengths with Non-Bravais Lattices

Shunsuke Murai et al.

Summary: Various optical phenomena can be induced in periodic arrays of nanoparticles through the radiative coupling of local dipoles. This study explores the tuning of bound states in the continuum (BICs) at telecom wavelengths in non-Bravais lattices by adjusting the size and position of lattice points. The results provide a simple way to achieve tunable BICs in both plasmonic and dielectric systems.

Polarization-Independent Quasibound States in the Continuum

Pravin Vaity et al.

Summary: This paper uncovers a new property of the trapped mode supported by a dielectric resonant metasurface, which changes its lattice symmetry. The study focuses on the transformation process of a metasurface composed of identical nanodisk resonators into a diatomic structure when one half of the nanodisks change their diameters. The folding of the Brillouin zone in the k-space results in the transformation of the trapped mode to quasi-BIC resonances, which exhibit polarization-independent response. This novel feature is experimentally verified in the transmission of the metasurfaces illuminated by light with both linear and circular polarizations.

Active nonlocal metasurfaces

Stephanie C. Malek et al.

Summary: Optical metasurfaces for wavefront shaping face challenges in actively tuning and reconfiguring wavefronts, with nonlocal metasurfaces functioning based on modes supported by adjacent meta-units. These nonlocal metasurfaces can produce sharp spectral features but typically lack spatial control of the outgoing wavefront. Leveraging enhanced light-matter interactions associated with sharp Fano resonances, active modulation of optical spectra and wavefronts can be explored without the need for unusual materials and fabrication or active control of individual meta-units.

Extended Bound States in the Continuum with Symmetry-Broken Terahertz Dielectric Metasurfaces

Song Han et al.

Summary: The study investigates traditional symmetry-protected and accidental BIC states in a fourfold rotationally symmetric array of silicon resonators in a square lattice. Upon symmetry-breaking, BICs transform into quasi-states with decaying quality factors that follow the inverse-square law as a function of the structural asymmetry parameter. Multiple new states of extended BICs are observed beyond typical inverse-square law behavior at larger asymmetries.

Plasmonic hot-electron photodetection with quasi-bound states in the continuum and guided resonances

Wenhao Wang et al.

Summary: We propose a novel Ag grating/TiO2 cladding hybrid structure for hot electron photodetection (HEPD), which combines quasi-bound states in the continuum (BIC) and plasmonic hot electrons to achieve perfect absorption and multiband HEPD. By combining quasi-BIC and guided resonance, our structure enables more efficient light harvesting compared to traditional gold plasmonics.

Active Control of Nanodielectric-Induced THz Quasi-BIC in Flexible Metasurfaces: A Platform for Modulation and Sensing

Thomas CaiWei Tan et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the creation of a dynamically controllable quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) with ultrahigh quality factor by embedding nanometric dielectric or semiconductor layers on a symmetric metallic metasurface at terahertz frequencies. The photoexcitation of nanostrips of germanium enables ultrafast switching of a QBIC resonance with significant transmission intensity modulation, presenting opportunities for active micro-nanophotonic devices. An optimization model is provided for (switchable) QBIC resonances in metamaterial arrays, which can serve as an enabling platform for active micro-nanophotonic devices.
