Ultrafast Imaging of Molecules with Electron Diffraction

Martin Centurion et al.

Summary: GUED is a technique used to probe the nuclear geometry evolution in photoexcited molecules. It is sensitive to the spatial distribution of charge and can capture coherent nuclear motions with high resolution. Improvements in temporal resolution have made GUED a powerful tool for studying structural dynamics in molecules.

Summary: Experimental investigation using gas-phase megaelectronvolt ultrafast electron diffraction on a-phellandrene undergoing electrocyclic ring-opening reaction confirmed the influence of conformers on photoinduced ring-opening reactions. The results were in quantitative agreement with nonadiabatic quantum molecular dynamics simulations.
