Giant bulk spin-orbit torque and efficient electrical switching in single ferrimagnetic FeTb layers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

Qianbiao Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports a distinct and giant bulk damping-like spin-orbit torque in strong-perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) ferrimagnetic Fe100-xTbx single layers. The giant bulk torque can switch thick Fe100-xTbx layers with very strong PMA and high coercivity at low current densities.

Boosting Spin-Orbit-Torque Efficiency in Spin-Current-Generator/Magnet/Oxide Superlattices

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method for efficient manipulation of magnetic materials, in which the stacking of superlattices with inversion-symmetry breaking can significantly enhance the efficiency of spin-orbit torques. This method allows for the achievement of perpendicular magnetic anisotropy in thick magnetic layers and enables the switching of such layers with lower power consumption.

Summary: Injecting spin currents into antiferromagnets can rotate and switch the Néel vector within the tilted easy plane, comparable to classical ferrimagnetic insulators. This study introduces a new platform for quantitatively characterizing switching and oscillation dynamics in antiferromagnets.

Strong enhancement of spin-orbit torques in ferrimagnetic Ptx(Si3N4)1-x/CoTb bilayers by Si3N4 doping

Xin Lin et al.

Summary: We report a strong enhancement of spin-orbit torques in dirty metal Pt by incorporating Si3N4 impurities. The enhancement is attributed to the optimized trade-off between the intrinsic spin Hall conductivity and the spin carrier lifetime in the dirty limit, resulting in a twofold increase in the dampinglike spin-orbit torque per unit current density in Pt-x(Si3N4)(1-x)/Co0.65Tb0.35 bilayers. We also find that only 58% of the angular momentum of the spin current contributes to spin torque generation.

Topological alloy engineering and locally linearized gap dependence on concentration

Dongwook Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, we systematically investigate the evolution of the band gap in a topological alloy as a function of alloy concentration using first-principles calculations. We found that the band gap in topological alloys exhibits a complex fragmented pattern and shows a linear dependence on concentration locally in each distinct phase. Moreover, we demonstrate that topological alloy engineering can be used as a general approach to tune the topological order.

Efficient Spin-Orbit Torque Generation in Semiconducting WTe2 with Hopping Transport

Cheng-Wei Peng et al.

Summary: Recent research shows that amorphous WTe2 heterostructures deposited by magnetron sputtering exhibit high SOT efficiency and low damping constant, allowing for extremely low critical switching current density. The SOT efficiency is found to depend on the relative compositions of W and Te in the co-sputtered samples.

Maximizing spin-orbit torque generated by the spin Hall effect of Pt

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: Platinum, with its giant spin Hall conductivity and compatibility with CMOS circuits, has the potential to be an outstanding provider of spin-orbit torques; however, pure clean-limit Pt with low resistivity still provides a low damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency, limiting its practical applications; the efficiency of spin-orbit torque in Pt-based magnetic heterostructures can be significantly improved by increasing the spin Hall ratio of Pt and the spin transmissivity of the interfaces.

Dephasing of transverse spin current in ferrimagnetic alloys

Youngmin Lim et al.

Summary: In this study, the dephasing length of transverse spin current in ferrimagnetic CoGd alloys was estimated, showing that it is about 4-5 times longer in nearly compensated CoGd than in ferromagnetic metals. The finding suggests that antiferromagnetic order can mitigate spin dephasing and that transverse spin current interacts more strongly with the Co sublattice. These results provide fundamental insights into the interplay between spin current and antiferromagnetic order for engineering spin torque effects in ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic metals.
