How do carbon footprints from LCA and EEIOA databases compare?: A comparison of ecoinvent and EXIOBASE

Bernhard Steubing et al.

Summary: Life cycle assessment (LCA) and environmentally extended input output analysis (EEIOA) are widely used methods to assess the environmental impacts of products and services for decision support. This study compares carbon footprint (CF) results in different databases and identifies variations and potential improvements in the databases. The findings provide important insights for decision makers and emphasize the need for strategic database improvements.

Increased carbon footprint of materials production driven by rise in investments

Edgar G. Hertwich

Summary: The production of materials is a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, and policies are being implemented worldwide to increase material efficiency and promote the circular economy. Research shows that greenhouse gas emissions from material production have been steadily increasing, with a majority of the growth coming from China. The carbon footprint of materials is mainly attributed to construction and the manufacturing of durable products, and policies should focus on addressing the growing capital stocks in emerging economies.

CO2 emission reduction potential in China from combined effects of structural adjustment of economy and efficiency improvement

Huijuan Xiao et al.

Summary: China has committed to reducing its emission intensity by 60% to 65% by 2030 compared to 2005 levels and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. Economic structure adjustment and improvement in CO2 emission efficiency are key to emission reduction. Technical feasibility analysis shows certain regions face significant challenges in achieving emission reduction goals.

Linking the Environmental Pressures of China's Capital Development to Global Final Consumption of the Past Decades and into the Future

Quanliang Ye et al.

Summary: This study quantifies the linkages between China's capital formation, environmental pressures, and consumption, showing that a significant portion of capital assets acquired by China from 1995 to 2015 have not yet been depreciated and will serve future production and consumption. Outsourcing of capital services also leads to considerable environmental pressures, ranging from 14% to 25% depending on the indicators. Without considering the linkages between capital and final consumption, calculations of China's environmental footprints related to the six environmental pressures could be significantly underestimated or overestimated.

Embodied greenhouse gas emissions from building China's large-scale power transmission infrastructure

Wendong Wei et al.

Summary: The research shows that the construction of China's power transmission infrastructure has led to a significant increase in greenhouse gas emissions, reaching 0.89 GtCO(2)-equivalent by 2017, a 7.3-fold increase since 1990. The gaps between the well-developed eastern and less-developed western regions in China have gradually narrowed. Voltage class, transmission-line length, and terrain were identified as important factors influencing embodied GHG emissions.

Co-benefits of carbon and pollution control policies on air quality and health till 2030 in China

Jinzhao Yang et al.

Summary: China has extensively assessed the benefits of carbon and pollution control policies using an integrated framework combining various models, finding that end-of-pipe control measures can reduce mortality related to PM2.5 and O3. Provinces in heavily polluted regions are expected to benefit more, with an increase in population exposure to PM2.5 under the national air quality standard by 2030 while relatively few people will experience WHO guideline levels for O3. The study highlights the importance of joint control strategies for PM2.5 and O3 in future policy-making.
