Variation of Antigen 43 self-association modulates bacterial compacting within aggregates and biofilms

Julieanne L. Vo et al.

Summary: The formation of bacterial aggregates and biofilms plays an important role in bacterial colonization and infection progression. A study investigated autotransporters, a group of bacterial adhesins, and found that specific interactions between amino acids on the contacting interfaces of adjacent proteins drive cell clumping, and subtle variation of these interactions alters aggregation kinetics and the degree of compacting within cell clusters.

Phylogenetic Classification and Functional Review of Autotransporters

Kaitlin R. Clarke et al.

Summary: Autotransporters are molecular nano-machines that play a crucial role in delivering proteins across the outer membrane of bacteria. Recent studies have shown their importance in bacterial fitness and pathogenesis, making them potential targets for therapeutic interventions. This review provides an overview of autotransporter proteins and proposes a new classification system based on phylogenetic analysis.

Molecular Basis for Bordetella pertussis Interference with Complement, Coagulation, Fibrinolytic, and Contact Activation Systems: the Cryo-EM Structure of the Vag8-C1 Inhibitor Complex

Arun Dhillon et al.

Summary: The autotransporter protein Virulence-associated gene 8 (Vag8) produced by Bordetella pertussis has been found to interfere with the function of the C1 inhibitor (C1-INH). Cryo-electron microscopy was used to determine the structure of the Vag8-C1-INH complex, revealing a unique mechanism of inhibition where Vag8 sequesters the reactive center loop of C1-INH to prevent its interaction with target proteases.
