Features of iron accumulation at high concentration in pulcherrimin-producing Metschnikowia yeast biomass

Kestutis Mazeika et al.

Summary: The antimicrobial properties of pulcherrimin-producing Metschnikowia species are related to the formation of a red pigment-pulcherrimin and sequestration of free iron from their growth medium. Different strains of Metschnikowia exhibit distinct yeast biomass coatings under high elemental Fe concentration, with increased formation of chlamydospores that accumulate a red pigment-insoluble pulcherrimin rich in iron. Pulcherrimin in biomass is detected at both high and low elemental Fe concentrations, with the chemical binding of iron leading to sequestration of soluble Fe and accumulation of pulcherrimin in biomass chlamydospores.

Microbial volatile organic compounds in intra-kingdom and inter-kingdom interactions

Laure Weisskopf et al.

Summary: Microorganisms produce and excrete a versatile array of metabolites with different physico-chemical properties and biological activities. Recent research has revealed that microbial volatiles are chemically diverse and play important roles in microbial interactions and inter-kingdom communication. The potential biotechnological applications of microbial volatiles, along with challenges and perspectives in this emerging research field, have also been discussed.

The antagonistic Metschnikowia andauensis produces extracellular enzymes and pulcherrimin, whose production can be promoted by the culture factors

Eniko Horvath et al.

Summary: Biological control using pigment-producing Metschnikowia andauensis as an alternative to fungicidal chemicals can inhibit growth of other microbes, with the production of pulcherrimin being influenced by factors such as glucose, pectin, and certain amino acids.

Basidiomycetes Are Particularly Sensitive to Bacterial Volatile Compounds: Mechanistic Insight Into the Case Study of Pseudomonas protegens Volatilome Against Heterobasidion abietinum

Maria Isabella Prigigallo et al.

Summary: The study found that beneficial bacteria-produced volatile organic compounds can inhibit the growth of various fungi, potentially primarily due to biogenic ammonia generated from protein degradation. In vitro experiments showed that the VOCs from the biocontrol agent Pseudomonas protegens can inhibit Heterobasidion abietinum through the production of specific compounds such as dimethyl trisulfide and 2-ethylhexanol.
