Out-of-equilibrium criticalities in graphene superlattices

Alexey Berdyugin et al.

Summary: In the out-of-equilibrium state, the carrier distribution in graphene and its superlattices is shifted away from equilibrium, leading to a critical-current behavior where the filled bands play a crucial role. The characteristics of this state include current-voltage characteristics similar to superconductors, sharp peaks in differential resistance, sign reversal of the Hall effect, and an anomaly caused by the production of hot electron-hole plasma similar to the Schwinger effect. This behavior is expected to be common in all graphene-based superlattices.

Valley polarized conductance quantization in bilayer graphene narrow quantum point contact

Kohei Sakanashi et al.

Summary: In this study, quantum point contacts narrower than 100nm were fabricated by applying a perpendicular electric field to bilayer graphene encapsulated between hexagonal boron nitride sheets. The conductance across the quantum point contact was quantized at a high perpendicular-displacement field, with a quantization unit of 2e(2)/h. The presence of a lifted degeneracy state in the quantum point contact suggests the existence of a valley polarized state possibly originating from the potential profile or effective displacement field in the one-dimensional channel.
