Coordinated resource allocation to plant growth-defense tradeoffs

Russell K. Monson et al.

Summary: Plant resource allocation patterns often show a tradeoff between growth (G) and defense (D), with ecological theory and discoveries in multi-omics biology helping to understand the mechanisms behind these tradeoffs. Multi-omic studies provide insight into the coordinated resource allocation that justifies optimality theory and calibrates G-D tradeoff commitments. The coordinated resource allocation hypothesis (CoRAH) integrates supply- and demand-side perspectives of previous G-D tradeoff theories.

Cross-biome synthesis of source versus sink limits to tree growth

Antoine Cabon et al.

Summary: Uncertainties in tree carbon allocation to growth limit projections of forest carbon sequestration and response to climate change. Our study reveals widespread decoupling between carbon assimilation and tree growth, driven by varying climatic sensitivities and tree species. Sink control over tree growth becomes more prominent with canopy closure, aridity, and decreasing temperatures.

Mechanisms of woody-plant mortality under rising drought, CO2 and vapour pressure deficit

Nate G. McDowell et al.

Summary: Drought-associated woody-plant mortality is increasing globally, impacting climate, biodiversity, and resources. This review synthesizes knowledge of the mechanisms underlying drought-related tree death, including water and carbon depletion, and the influence of soil-to-root conductance and carbon supply rates.

Plant carbohydrate depletion impairs water relations and spreads via ectomycorrhizal networks

Gerard Sapes et al.

Summary: The study shows that the depletion of stored NSCs influences the regulation of plant water balance independently of plant water deficit. Even without drought, NSC depletion impairs osmoregulation and turgor maintenance. Importantly, EM networks propagate NSC depletion and its negative effects on water retention from carbon-stressed to non-stressed hosts.

Hotter droughts alter resource allocation to chemical defenses in pinon pine

Amy M. Trowbridge et al.

Summary: Heat and drought have synergistic effects on increasing monoterpene concentrations in mature pinon pines, while decreasing key monoterpenes that play important roles in bark beetle ecology. This highlights the complex and potentially detrimental impacts of combined stressors on plant chemical defenses.

Foliar respiration is related to photosynthetic, growth and carbohydrate response to experimental drought and elevated temperature

Adam D. Collins et al.

Summary: Short-term plant respiration increases exponentially with rising temperature, but drought could reduce respiration by reducing growth and metabolism. Differences in response to elevated temperature were related to substrate availability and stomatal response to leaf water potential, suggesting that species responses will be critical in ecosystem response to a warmer climate.

Temporal controls on crown nonstructural carbohydrates in southwestern US tree species

Drew M. P. Peltier et al.

Summary: The study shows that there is large seasonal variation in crown NSC concentrations, reflecting the multifunctionality of NSCs in plant tissues, including storage, growth, and regulation of hydraulically vulnerable leaves.
