Metallaphotoredox: The Merger of Photoredox and Transition Metal Catalysis

Amy Y. Chan et al.

Summary: The merger of photoredox catalysis with transition metal catalysis, known as metallaphotoredox catalysis, has become an important part of synthetic methodology. It combines the bond formation capability of transition metal catalysis with the utility of photoinduced electron and energy transfer processes. Photocatalytic substrate activation allows the involvement of simple starting materials in metal-mediated bond-forming processes, while electron or energy transfer with organometallic intermediates provides a complementary activation mode to traditional catalytic platforms.

Etherification of Fluoroarenes with Alkoxyboronic Acid Pinacol Esters via C-F Bond Cleavage

Jun Zhou et al.

Summary: A potassium base-mediated defluoroetherification method for aryl and heteroaryl fluorides is reported, which efficiently and safely provides a wide variety of aryl ethers without the use of metal catalysts, specific ligands, and harsh conditions. This method can also be applied to the late-stage etherification of structurally complex fluorides and bioactive alcohols.

Frustrated Radical Pairs: Insights from EPR Spectroscopy

Ayan Dasgupta et al.

Summary: Progress in frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry has highlighted the significance of main group elements in catalysis, introducing novel approaches to synthetic chemistry. Recent studies have uncovered new reactivities of frustrated Lewis pairs involving single-electron transfer processes, leading to the formation of reactive frustrated radical pairs (FRP). Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy has been employed to explain the nature and stability of the observed radical species.

Synthesis of trifluoromethyl ketones by nucleophilic trifluoromethylation of esters under a fluoroform/KHMDS/triglyme system

Yamato Fujihira et al.

Summary: A method utilizing fluoroform to synthesize biologically attractive trifluoromethyl ketones from methyl esters was developed, achieving high yields of up to 92% at -40 degrees C. The study explored the substrate scope of trifluoromethylation procedure for various aromatic, aliphatic, and conjugated methyl esters, as well as the tolerance of different pharmacophores under the reaction conditions.

Silylboronate-Mediated Defluorosilylation of Aryl Fluorides with or without Ni-Catalyst

Jun Zhou et al.

Summary: The defluorosilylation of aryl fluorides to access aryl silanes was achieved under transition-metal-free conditions via an inert C-F bond activation. This method, mediated by silylboronates and KOtBu, proceeds smoothly at room temperature to afford various aryl silanes in good yields. While a comparative experiment showed that a Ni catalyst facilitated the transformation more efficiently, the transition-metal-free protocol is advantageous from a green chemistry perspective.

Pentafluoroethylation of Carbonyl Compounds by HFC-125 via the Encapsulation of the K Cation with Glymes

Yamato Fujihira et al.

Summary: A simple protocol using potassium bases with triglyme or tetraglyme as solvents can safely yield pentafluoroethylation products. Encapsulation of the K cation by glymes inhibits its contact with reactive anionic pentafluoroethyl counterions, preventing their transformation into explosive tetrafluoroethylene. The generation of sterically demanding K(G3)(2) and K(G4)(2) cations serves as an effective reservoir for unstable pentafluoroethyl anions.

Summary: Researchers have proposed a method to prepare 3-methyl-2(E)-enals or -enones from 2,3-allenols and organoboronic acids using a 1,4-H transfer, which is highly stereoselective and straightforward, accommodating various functional groups. This method can efficiently generate deuterated 2(E)-enals or -enones, providing a convenient pathway for the preparation of other deuterated compounds.
