Optically Triggered Neel Vector Manipulation of a Metallic Antiferromagnet Mn2Au under Strain

Vladimir Grigorev et al.

Summary: The absence of stray fields, insensitivity to external magnetic fields, and ultrafast dynamics make antiferromagnets promising candidates for active elements in spintronic devices. Researchers demonstrate successful manipulation of the Neel vector in the metallic collinear antiferromagnet Mn2Au by using strain and femtosecond laser excitation. The aligned state achieved through this method is stable at room temperature and insensitive to magnetic fields, suggesting potential applications in robust high-density memory devices.

Direct Imaging of Current-Induced Antiferromagnetic Switching Revealing a Pure Thermomagnetoelastic Switching Mechanism in NiO

Hendrik Meer et al.

Summary: Researchers have unraveled the mechanism of current-induced magnetic switching in insulating antiferromagnet/heavy metal systems using concurrent transport and magneto-optical measurements. Different final states of the switching in specially engineered NiO/Pt bilayers devices were observed with different electrical pulsing and device geometries, attributed to the thermomagnetoelastic switching mechanism combined with thermal excitations. This noncontact mechanism provides a potential explanation for previously reported contradicting observations of switching final state attributed to spin-orbit torque mechanisms.

Quenching of an antiferromagnet into high resistivity states using electrical or ultrashort optical pulses

Z. Kaspar et al.

Summary: Electrical and ultrashort optical pulses can deterministically induce and reverse nano-fragmented domain states in antiferromagnetic CuMnAs, leading to a reversible and reproducible process with approximately 20% changes in system resistance at room temperature. This phenomenon opens up new possibilities for the application of antiferromagnetic materials in spintronic devices.

Readout of an antiferromagnetic spintronics system by strong exchange coupling of Mn2Au and Permalloy

S. P. Bommanaboyena et al.

Summary: In this study, strong exchange coupling between a unique metallic antiferromagnet Mn2Au and thin ferromagnetic Permalloy layers is demonstrated, allowing benefits from established read-out methods of ferromagnets while slightly diminishing the advantages of antiferromagnetic spintronics. Tuning the ferromagnetic layer thickness can restrict the reorientation of Mn2Au Neel vector by Permalloy magnetization. High resolution electron microscopy imaging reveals a well-defined interface morphology that leads to the strong exchange coupling in the heterostructure.
