Channel morphodynamics and sediment budget of the Lower Ganga River using a hydrogeomorphological approach

Rajiv Sinha et al.

Summary: The Lower Ganga River is prone to siltation due to low slope, sediment-charged rivers, reduction in non-monsoon flows, and the impact of the Farakka barrage. This study used remote sensing data and UAV surveys to analyze channel morphodynamics and sediment volumes. Findings reveal significant siltation in several reaches of the Lower Ganga River over the past few decades.

Tidal amplification and river capture in response to land reclamation in the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta

D. S. van Maren et al.

Summary: Globally, intertidal areas are being reclaimed for agriculture and urban expansion, resulting in high human pressure on the coastal zone. The Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta is a prime example of this development. A study on the southwest GBD reveals how land reclamation leads to tidal amplification, channel shoaling, bank erosion, and interaction between channels. Positive feedback mechanisms, such as immediate loss of tidal storage and asynchronous reclamation, contribute to pluvial flooding, bank erosion, and poorly navigable waterways. Intervention measures need to consider these complex feedback mechanisms and adopt nature-based and holistic approaches.

In harm's way: Non-migration decisions of people at risk of slow-onset coastal hazards in Bangladesh

Bishawjit Mallick et al.

Summary: The study explores the factors influencing non-migration decisions in risk communities in coastal Bangladesh, finding that land ownership, social connectedness, and household economic strength are the strongest predictors of non-migration decisions. This is the first study to use the Protection Motivation Theory (PMT) to understand migration-related behavior, with relevant findings for policy planning in vulnerable regions exposed to climate-related risks.

Md. Didarul Islam et al.

Summary: This IMR Dispatch discusses the relocation of a large number of Rohingyas from Bangladesh refugee camps to a new island, which has raised concerns from human rights groups and the international community regarding issues such as coercion, environmental risks, and human rights protection. The government of Bangladesh claims that the relocation is voluntary and offers improved living conditions, while international organizations fear potential harm to the forcibly displaced Rohingya community.

Overcoming challenges for implementing nature-based solutions in deltaic environments: insights from the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh

Animesh K. Gain et al.

Summary: This article examines nature-based solutions (NbSs) as a complementary or alternative approach to managing hazards in the Ganges-Brahmaputra (GB) delta. By evaluating existing methods such as tidal river management, mangrove afforestation, and oyster reef cultivation, the study finds that these approaches can help mitigate the impacts of coastal hazards. However, there are major challenges in implementing these methods, including socioeconomic, biophysical, governance, and policy considerations.

On viability: Climate change and the science of possible futures

Kasia Paprocki

Summary: This article explores the discourse and factors influencing viability in the era of climate change. It finds that viability is not only influenced by physical limitations and tipping points, but also co-produced by political economic structures exercising power at different scales. The author analyzes three dialectics of viability: epistemic/material, epistemic/normative, and inter-scalar, which shape the knowledge regimes governing social and biophysical processes. Through a study of unviable agrarian livelihoods in coastal Bangladesh, the author further examines the dialectics of viability and demonstrates how scientific attention to political economy shapes the politics of possibility. Lastly, the author shows how discourses of viability limit alternative economic and ecological futures through a concrete examination of viable agrarian futures in coastal communities.

The unequal distribution of water risks and adaptation benefits in coastal Bangladesh

Emily J. Barbour et al.

Summary: People in Bangladesh's coastal zone face multiple water-related risks. This modeling study finds that rising salinity and waterlogging negate the benefits of rehabilitating embankments for reducing crop loss, with impacts being greatest for the poor. Drainage was found to reduce negative impacts.

Political ecologies of resettlement in river deltas

Friedrich Nikolaus Neu et al.

Summary: This article conceptualizes resettlement in river deltas as a highly political process with far-reaching implications for the environment, economy, society, and culture. It challenges reductionist views of resettlement and opens up new perspectives for critical research. The article aims to initiate conceptual debate and provide a review of recent case studies on resettlement informed by political ecology.

A global synthesis of the effectiveness of sedimentation-enhancing strategies for river deltas and estuaries

Jana R. Cox et al.

Summary: A comparison of 21 existing and planned Sedimentation-Enhancing Strategies (SES) shows that most strategies are capable of outpacing high rates of sea-level rise, creating wetlands, flood water storage, and opportunities for agriculture, aquaculture, housing, or recreational land use. Combinations of multiple SES are likely the most effective and sustainable method for maintaining elevation in river deltas.

Sustainability of the coastal zone of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna delta under climatic and anthropogenic stresses

Md. Munsur Rahman et al.

Summary: The research examines the sedimentation and sustainable development of the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna (GBM) delta. The study finds that under quasi-natural conditions, sedimentation can exceed the current rates of relative sea-level rise and potentially create new land mass. Encouraging quasi-natural conditions through the widespread application of sediment management measures has the potential to promote more sustainable outcomes for the GBM delta.

Environmental non-migration as adaptation in hazard-prone areas: Evidence from coastal Bangladesh

Fatema Khatun et al.

Summary: Despite the adverse impacts of climate change and human-induced hazards, many people in hazard-prone coastal areas of Bangladesh choose not to migrate. This study examines the factors influencing voluntary non-migration decisions and finds that those who choose to stay benefit from access to basic needs and social support in their communities. Additionally, the social, psychological, and economic opportunities available at their current location, as well as their access to local natural resources, contribute to their desire to stay and adapt to climatic shocks.

Exceptional increases in fluvial sediment fluxes in a warmer and wetter High Mountain Asia

Dongfeng Li et al.

Summary: Rivers originating in High Mountain Asia are vital for one-third of the world's population, but are now facing amplified climate change and glacier melt. Data shows significant increases in runoff and sediment fluxes in the past six decades, with projections indicating further rises in sediment flux by 2050. These findings have wide-ranging implications for the region's hydropower, food security, and environmental stability.

Steven C. Clemens et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed South Asian summer monsoon precipitation and runoff to assess their operation in the Pleistocene. It found a strong coherence between South Asian precipitation and runoff with Earth's orbital parameters, atmospheric carbon dioxide changes, and cross-equatorial wind strength at the precession band. The projected monsoon response to ongoing high-latitude ice melt and rising carbon dioxide levels is consistent with past dynamics over the past 0.9 million years.
