Origin of high thermal conductivity in disentangled ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene films: ballistic phonons within enlarged crystals

Taeyong Kim et al.

Summary: This article investigates the thermal conductivity and mean free path accumulation function of disentangled UHMWPE films. The experimental results show that longitudinal atomic vibrations are the primary heat carriers, and the mean free path is limited by the dimensions of extended crystals. This study is of great importance for understanding the thermal transport properties of oriented polymers.

Unified modeling and experimental realization of electrical and thermal percolation in polymer composites

Navid Sarikhani et al.

Summary: The relationship between electrical and thermal conduction in polymer composites is complex due to the contributions of charge and heat carriers at the nanoscale junctions of filler particles. In this study, a generalized percolation framework was developed to describe the conductive properties in a wide range of filler-to-matrix conductivity ratios. Experimental verification of the framework was conducted using carbon nanotubes in polypropylene composites, showing ultralow percolation thresholds for electrical and thermal conductivity.

Effects of Boron Doping on the Bulk and Surface Acoustic Phonons in Single-Crystal Diamond

Erick Guzman et al.

Summary: The investigation of acoustic phonons in undoped and boron-doped single-crystal diamond films reveals a pronounced phonon softening effect as the boron doping concentration increases. The shear-horizontal and high-frequency pseudo-longitudinal acoustic phonons experience significant changes in velocity due to degenerate boron doping. The frequency of optical phonons remains unaffected at low boron concentration, but decreases significantly at high doping levels. Density-functional-theory calculations confirm the phonon softening effect resulting from boron doping in diamond.

Comparison of Brillouin Light Scattering and Density of States in a Supported Layer: Analytical and Experimental Study

Ossama El Abouti et al.

Summary: This study provides a detailed analytical calculation of the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) intensity in a layer on a substrate, considering both photoelastic and moving boundary mechanisms. By comparing the BLS intensity with the density of states (DOS), the dispersion curves of longitudinal guided modes in the supported layer can be determined. The study derives closed-form expressions of BLS and DOS for high elastic parameter mismatch, and shows a simple relationship between these two quantities. The theoretical calculations are performed using the Green's function approach.

Specifics of Thermal Transport in Graphene Composites: Effect of Lateral Dimensions of Graphene Fillers

Sriharsha Sudhindra et al.

Summary: The study revealed that increasing the size of graphene fillers enhances the thermal conductivity of composites, with fillers of 1200 nm lateral dimensions exhibiting lower thermal contact resistance. The effects of filler loading fraction and size on thermal conductivity were rationalized using the Kanari model. These findings are crucial for optimizing graphene fillers in thermal interface materials for efficient heat removal in high-power-density electronics.
