Topologically localized excitons in single graphene nanoribbons

Song Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) were explored using a scanning tunneling microscope-based method. By transferring the GNRs onto a partially insulating surface, luminescence quenching effects were prevented and localized dark excitons associated with the topological end states of the GNRs were observed.

Charge Transfer-Mediated Dramatic Enhancement of Raman Scattering upon Molecular Point Contact Formation

Borja Cirera et al.

Summary: This study investigates the Raman scattering of C-60 molecules in a single molecular junction using low-temperature tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. The results show that the Raman enhancement in the molecular point contact regime enables the observation of vibrations that are undetectable in the tunneling regime.

Ultrashort Pulse Excited Tip-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in Molecules

Yang Luo et al.

Summary: Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) allows for the tracing of vibrational fingerprints of molecules and low-dimensional materials with subnanometer resolution. The localization of light in the plasmonic nanocavity of the STM enables high spatial resolution in STM-TERS. However, the temporal resolution is currently limited. In this study, stable TERS measurements were demonstrated from subphthalocyanine (SubPc) molecules excited by 500 fs long laser pulses in a low-temperature (LT) ultrahigh-vacuum (UHV) STM. The intensity of the TERS signal scales linearly with the increasing flux of the laser pulses and exponentially with the decreasing gap-size of the plasmonic nanocavity. Furthermore, the characteristic features of TERS excited with ultrashort pulses were compared with those excited with a continuous-wave (CW) laser.

Towards chirality control of graphene nanoribbons embedded in hexagonal boron nitride

Hui Shan Wang et al.

Summary: Utilizing oriented trenches in h-BN as templates, armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons with chirality-dependent electrical and magnetic conductance properties were successfully grown, offering a promising route for integrated circuitry of atomic thickness. Fabricating edge-specific GNRs in the lattice of h-BN remains a significant challenge despite the developed two-step growth method for achieving sub-5-nm-wide zigzag and armchair GNRs. Conductance measurements show that different widths of zigzag GNRs exhibit openings of the bandgap inversely proportional to their width, while armchair GNRs display fluctuation in this relationship.

Raman Detection of Bond Breaking and Making of a Chemisorbed Up-Standing Single Molecule at Single-Bond Level

Rui-Pu Wang et al.

Summary: In this work, we demonstrated real-time tracking of bond breaking and making processes of an up-standing melamine molecule chemisorbed on Cu(100) using subnanometer resolved tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). The results indicate the chemical and structural sensitivity of TERS for single-molecule recognition beyond flat-lying planar molecules.

Anti-Stokes Raman Scattering of Single Carbyne Chains

Cla Duri Tschannen et al.

Summary: In this study, anti-Stokes Raman scattering of single carbyne chains confined inside double-walled carbon nanotubes was investigated using tip-enhanced Raman scattering (TERS). The temperature dependence of carbyne's Raman spectrum was studied and laser-induced heating was quantified based on the anti-Stokes/Stokes ratio. Due to its molecular size and large Raman cross section, carbyne shows great promise for local temperature monitoring and potential applications in nanoelectronics and biology.

Summary: This study reports the vertical integration of borophene with DBP and measures the angstrom-scale interfacial interactions using UHV-TERS, demonstrating the potential of UHV-TERS as a powerful analytical tool for spectroscopically investigating buried and highly localized interfacial characteristics at the atomic scale. The study also shows the ability of molecular manipulation experiments to provide atomic control of local strain and reveal the molecular origins of interfacial strain in the heterostructure.

Graphene nanoribbons for quantum electronics

Haomin Wang et al.

Summary: Graphene nanoribbons, as a family of one-dimensional materials with a graphitic lattice structure, have shown high mobility, current-carrying capability, and versatile electronic properties, making them promising candidates for quantum electronic applications. Recent progress has been made in the atomically precise bottom-up synthesis of GNRs and heterojunctions, as well as in the production of semiconducting GNR arrays on insulating substrates, indicating a potential for large-scale digital circuits. In the near future, GNRs could become competitive candidate materials in quantum information sciences.
