Cigarette smoke extract-induced inflammatory response via inhibition of the TFEB-mediated autophagy in NR8383 cells

Shu-wen Xu et al.

Summary: Chronic pulmonary inflammation caused by long-term smoking is the core pathology of COPD, and alveolar macrophages play a role in this process. Impaired autophagy in macrophages leads to the accumulation of damaged materials and triggers an inflammatory response. The role of TFEB-mediated autophagy in the inflammatory response induced by cigarette smoke extract (CSE) is still unclear. Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between TFEB-mediated autophagy and CSE-induced inflammatory response in NR8383 cells and explored the underlying mechanism.

Global burden of chronic respiratory diseases and risk factors, 1990-2019: an update from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Sara Momtazmanesh et al.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and national estimates of the burden of chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) from 1990 to 2019. The results show that although the age-standardised prevalence, death, and DALY rates of CRDs have decreased, they still cause a substantial burden and deaths worldwide. The highest death and DALY rates are found in low and low-middle SDI countries, emphasizing the urgent need for improved preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic measures.

Burden of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease attributable to non-optimal temperature from 1990 to 2019: a systematic analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Jianjun Bai et al.

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the third leading cause of death worldwide. In addition to traditional risk factors, the impact of non-optimal temperature on COPD burden has received widespread attention. This study analyzed data from GBD 2019 and employed various models to assess the spatiotemporal patterns, relationships with socio-demographic level, and the effects of age, period, and cohort on the burden of COPD attributable to non-optimal temperature. The findings showed a declining global burden of COPD due to non-optimal temperatures, but it remained more severe in certain populations and regions. Cold weather had a greater impact than heat, and there was an inverted U-shaped relationship between socio-demographic index (SDI) and COPD burden. Improvements were observed in period and cohort effects, but were limited in lower SDI regions. Targeted programs are needed to reduce this burden, particularly in lower SDI countries.

Cigarette smoke-induced impairment of autophagy in macrophages increases galectin-8 and inflammation

Summary: Cigarette smoke impairs cellular autophagy, leading to increased levels of galectin-8, which may be involved in the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
