Protective Effect of Saffron in Mouse Colitis Models Through Immune Modulation

Gulshan Singh et al.

Summary: In individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis, the risk of colorectal cancer is higher. Despite the availability of effective drugs for IBD treatment, some patients fail to respond over time or experience drug-induced adverse events. Saffron has been reported to possess anti-inflammatory properties, and this study aimed to investigate its potential therapeutic benefits in experimental colitis models. Results showed that saffron treatment at a dose of 20 mg/kg body weight improved colon gross and histology features, reduced disease activity index (DAI), and modulated immune cell profiles in the colonic mucosa. Saffron's protective effects appeared to be mediated in part through the activation of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR)-nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathways and regulation of innate and adaptive immune cell responses.

Anti-Depressant Properties of Crocin Molecules in Saffron

Shahida Anusha Siddiqui et al.

Summary: Saffron, a valued herb, has therapeutic effects including anti-depressant, anti-carcinogen, and stimulant properties. Its bioactive component, crocin, acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and impacts electrical field stimulation. It also inhibits monoamine reuptake, antagonizes N-methyl-d-aspartate, and improves brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling. Experimental studies have shown that saffron/crocin is similarly effective as fluoxetine and imipramine in treating depression disorders.

Summary: Epilepsy is a chronic disease of the central nervous system characterized by an electrical imbalance in neurons. The molecular processes that trigger epileptic seizures and promote neurotoxic effects are currently focused on the glutamate pathway and influx of calcium ions into neurons. Common molecular links between epilepsy and other neurodegenerative diseases have led to investigation of antiseizure drugs for therapeutic potential in these pathologies.
