Diagnosis and Evaluation of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy JACC State-of-the-Art Review

Barry J. Maron et al.

Summary: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a common global heart disease with complex phenotypic and genetic expression. Improvements in management strategies have led to better clinical outcomes. Reliable diagnosis with echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance, along with family screening and genetic analysis, play important roles in identifying patients and carriers.

Epidemiology of the inherited cardiomyopathies

William J. McKenna et al.

Summary: Estimates of the incidence and prevalence of inherited cardiomyopathies are challenging due to incomplete and late-onset disease expression, highly variable penetrance within families, and overlapping phenotypes. Current global estimates for hypertrophic, dilated, and arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathies may be conservative.

Cost-effectiveness of implantable ventricular assist devices in older children with stable, inotrope-dependent dilated cardiomyopathy

Anton L. V. Avancena et al.

Summary: In comparison to watchful waiting, VADs provide additional QALYs at a cost of $162,123 per QALY gained from a healthcare perspective, with a 17% chance of being cost-effective at a threshold of $100,000 per QALY gained. Sensitivity analyses suggest that VADs can be cost-effective if implantation costs decrease or if hospitalization costs or mortality among watchful waiting patients are higher.
