Sustaining nitrogen dynamics: A critical aspect for improving salt tolerance in plants

Faroza Nazir et al.

Summary: In the current changing environment, understanding the mechanisms of how plants function in saline environments is critical for mitigating the detrimental effects of salt stress. Nitrogen (N) plays a significant role in plant responses to salt stress and its efficient metabolism can alleviate salt-induced losses in crop plants. This review provides an overview of N-sensing, transportation, and assimilation in plants, assesses the salt stress-mediated regulation of N dynamics and nitrogen use-efficiency, and critically appraises the role of N in plants exposed to salt stress. The crosstalk between N and phytohormones and the potential of genetic engineering in developing salt-tolerant plants are also discussed.

Effects of NaCl and CaCl2 as Eustress Factors on Growth, Yield, and Mineral Composition of Hydroponically Grown Valerianella locusta

Orfeas Voutsinos-Frantzis et al.

Summary: Corn salad can benefit from mild salt stress induced by NaCl, as it enhances flavor and reduces nitrate content. It is important to choose the right type and concentration of salt solution. The research found that low-concentration NaCl irrigation can be used as an eustress solution to promote the growth of corn salad, making it suitable for cultivation in hydroponic systems with low-quality irrigation water (20 mM NaCl).

Contrasting effects of aridity and seasonality on global salinization

Saverio Perri et al.

Summary: A combination of global climatic data, soil observations, and ecohydrological models showed that average precipitation and rainfall seasonality have contrasting effects on soil salinization. Aridity enhances salinization, while rainfall seasonality reduces salt accumulation.

Nitrogen Availability Drives Mycorrhizal Effects on Wheat Growth, Nitrogen Uptake and Recovery under Salt Stress

Dario Giambalvo et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nitrogen availability plays a crucial role in the effectiveness of AM symbiosis in enhancing salt tolerance in durum wheat. The benefits of mycorrhizal symbiosis are only observed when sufficient nitrogen is available. In conditions of nitrogen deficiency, mycorrhizal symbiosis has no effect or can even be detrimental to plant growth and nitrogen uptake.

Salinity Effect on Plant Growth Parameters and Fruit Bioactive Compounds of Two Strawberry Cultivars, Coupled with Environmental Conditions Monitoring

Nikoleta-Kleio Denaxa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of salinity stress on plant growth, fruit physiological, and quality traits of two strawberry cultivars. The results showed that salinity stress negatively affected the growth parameters and yield of both cultivars. However, the two cultivars exhibited different patterns of response to salinity stress. The study also suggested that these cultivars could be interesting alternatives for cultivation in areas with slight salinization.

Integrated field assessment of nitrogen release dynamics and crop recovery of band-applied controlled-release fertilisers

Cristina Martinez et al.

Summary: The study found that controlled-release fertilizers can delay nitrogen release compared to standard urea, but do not show clear advantages in terms of crop productivity and yield. Despite differences in nitrogen release dynamics, in-season mineralization may mask any potential benefits from the slower release of nitrogen from controlled-release fertilizer products.
