The positive effect of black seed (Nigella sativa L.) essential oil on thyroid hormones in rats with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

Gulcan Avci et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of Nigella sativa L. essential oil on thyroid hormones and antioxidant balance in rats with induced hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. NSE administration resulted in increased TT3 and decreased nitric oxide in the hypothyroidism group, and decreased TT3 and increased total antioxidant capacity in the hyperthyroidism group. These findings suggest that NSE may have beneficial effects on thyroid gland abnormalities due to its antioxidant properties.

Summary: This study, a first crossover, double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial, demonstrates that N. sativa supplementation has significant positive effects on body mass index, body weight, waist circumference, and negative effects on body fat mass, body fat percent, and visceral fat area. Overall, N. sativa shows promise as a complementary therapy for obesity.
