Strategies of organic phosphorus recycling by soil bacteria: acquisition, metabolism, and regulation

Yeonsoo Park et al.

Summary: Soil bacteria employ various strategies to overcome the limitation of inorganic phosphorus in soils by secreting extracellular enzymes to degrade organic phosphorus and utilizing specific transporters and intracellular metabolic pathways for phosphorus recycling. The activities of phosphatases are influenced by soil environmental conditions. Regulatory mechanisms play a crucial role in the production of phosphatases, expression of transporters, and metabolic changes in response to phosphorus availability.

PCycDB: a comprehensive and accurate database for fast analysis of phosphorus cycling genes

Jiaxiong Zeng et al.

Summary: In this study, a well-curated phosphorus cycling database (PCycDB) was constructed, covering various phosphorus cycling genes (PCGs) and microorganisms (PCMs). Compared to other orthology databases, PCycDB showed higher accuracy and faster analysis speed. The study demonstrated that PCycDB is a powerful tool for advancing our understanding of microbially driven phosphorus cycling.

Niche-adaptation in plant-associated Bacteroidetes favours specialisation in organic phosphorus mineralisation

Ian D. E. A. Lidbury et al.

Summary: Bacteroidetes in the plant microbiome play a significant role in pathogen suppression and phosphorus mobilisation in the rhizosphere. Their success in this niche is attributed to their constitutive phosphatase activity, unique phosphatase PafA, and induction of specific outer membrane complexes and transporters under phosphate depletion conditions. The adaptation of Bacteroidetes to the plant microbiome has led to the acquisition of adaptive genomic signatures enhancing their phosphorus scavenging capabilities.

Y Alkaline phosphatase activity mediates soil organic phosphorus mineralization in a subalpine forest ecosystem

Jiabao Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of alkaline and acid phosphatase activities on soil P availability in subalpine forests. The results showed that alkaline phosphatase activity played a key role in regulating soil P availability, primarily modulated by soil total N and N:P ratio.

Crop type exerts greater influence upon rhizosphere phosphohydrolase gene abundance and phylogenetic diversity than phosphorus fertilization

Andrew L. Neal et al.

Summary: The study found that different phosphorus fertilizer sources did not significantly affect crop performance, but did influence the accumulation of fertilizer phosphorus into organic soil pools. Phosphatase activity was the only biological parameter influenced by phosphorus fertilization. Differences in rhizosphere microbiomes were observed due to crop type, not fertilization.

Characterization of extracellular phosphatase activities in periphytic biofilm from paddy field

Shujie Cai et al.

Summary: Periphytic biofilms in paddy fields exhibit high hydrolysis capacity for organic and condensed P, producing various phosphatases with different substrate specificities and responses under diverse environmental conditions. These phosphatases show distinct activities at different pH and temperature levels, displaying efficient catalytic efficiency for different forms of phosphates. Additionally, inorganic P availability plays a significant role in regulating phosphatase activities in the periphytic biofilm.

Organic phosphorus availability shapes the diversity of phoD-harboring bacteria in agricultural soil

Xiaomeng Wei et al.

Summary: The study found that the diversity of bacteria carrying the phoD gene in response to SOC and TN was related to the resource competition theory, with the highest diversity achieved at moderate SOC and TN concentrations. In contrast, the phoD diversity increased with increasing available Po concentration until reaching a stationary value, consistent with the metabolic theory. The availability of Po was identified as the most important predictor for the variation in phoD-harboring bacterial diversity and network topological features, highlighting the critical role of Po in structuring bacterial communities.

Soil Biogeochemical Cycle Couplings Inferred from a Function-Taxon Network

Bin Ma et al.

Summary: This study identified key microbial taxa regulating soil biogeochemical processes using metagenomic data from forest soils in eastern China, highlighting the sensitivity of soil pH as an indicator for functional gene composition and diversity. A bipartite network inferred from metagenomic contigs revealed microbial taxa regulating coupled biogeochemical cycles between carbon and phosphorus, nitrogen and sulfur, and nitrogen and iron, providing novel evidence for the coupling of soil biogeochemical cycles and demonstrating the efficacy of a new approach to investigate soil ecosystem functions.

Roles of Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganisms from Managing Soil Phosphorus Deficiency to Mediating Biogeochemical P Cycle

Jiang Tian et al.

Summary: Phosphate solubilizing microorganisms (PSMs) play a critical role in mediating bioavailable soil phosphorus (P), mineralizing organic P, solubilizing inorganic P minerals, and storing large amounts of P in biomass, impacting the soil P cycle and agricultural productivity. However, there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the role of PSMs in P geochemical processes, highlighting the need for further research to address environmental issues and manage P deficiency effectively.

Summary: The study revealed that marine APase enzyme exhibits promiscuous behavior, performing not only P-monoesterase activity but also P-diesterase, P-triesterase, and sulfatase activities. APase is highly efficient as a P-monoesterase at high substrate concentrations, while promiscuous activities are more efficient at low substrate concentrations.
