A Novel Enrichment Culture Highlights Core Features of Microbial Networks Contributing to Autotrophic Fe(II) Oxidation Coupled to Nitrate Reduction

Yu-Ming Huang et al.

Summary: A novel autotrophic NRFO enrichment culture named culture BP was studied, revealing the involvement of various genes and transcripts related to metal oxidation, denitrification, carbon fixation, and oxidative phosphorylation. Metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses were conducted to identify key players in autotrophic NRFO, with subsequent environmental sampling confirming the presence of similar organisms contributing to NRFO in situ.

Fate of nitrate during groundwater recharge in a fractured karst aquifer in Southwest Germany

Anna-Neva Visser et al.

Summary: This study in Germany investigated the role of karstified recharge areas in nitrate (NO3-) transfer and turnover, revealing a significant spatial variability in groundwater NO3- concentrations. Isotopic analysis confirmed the main source of NO3- is manure or fertilizer applications, with denitrification indicated by high delta N-15 and delta O-18 values in NO3- and elevated NO2- concentrations. The results suggest that fissure networks in the phreatic zone and the epikarst play an important role in nitrogen turnover during aquifer recharge.

An evolving view on biogeochemical cycling of iron

Andreas Kappler et al.

Summary: The biogeochemical cycling of iron plays a crucial role in environmental processes such as ocean productivity, carbon storage, greenhouse gas emissions, and nutrient and contaminant fate. Recent studies have uncovered novel processes in the biogeochemical iron cycle and shown that oxidation and reduction of iron occur cyclically or simultaneously in many environments.

Nitrate Removal by a Novel Lithoautotrophic Nitrate-Reducing, Iron(II)-Oxidizing Culture Enriched from a Pyrite-Rich Limestone Aquifer

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: Nitrate removal in olitrotrophic environments is limited by the availability of organic electron donors. Chemolithoautotrophic bacteria may play a key role in denitrification in aquifers depleted in organic carbon. An enriched lithoautotrophic culture of nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation microorganisms was successfully obtained from nitrate-containing groundwater.

Anaerobic Neutrophilic Pyrite Oxidation by a Chemolithoautotrophic Nitrate-Reducing Iron(II)-Oxidizing Culture Enriched from a Fractured Aquifer

Natalia Jakus et al.

Summary: Research indicates that direct microbial pyrite oxidation is a significant pathway in nitrate reduction, with enzymatic activity of the bacterial culture playing a key role, while the contribution of abiotic pyrite oxidation by Fe3+ is found to be negligible.

Temperature dependence of nitrate-reducing Fe(II) oxidation by Acidovorax strain BoFeN1-evaluating the role of enzymatic vs. abiotic Fe(II) oxidation by nitrite

Nicole Dopffel et al.

Summary: Through cultivation experiments and biogeochemical modeling analysis, we found that below 30 degrees Celsius, biologically driven Fe(II) oxidation largely dominates overall Fe(II) oxidation, while abiotic Fe(II) oxidation by nitrite plays a less significant role.
