Antarctic biodiversity predictions through substrate qualities and environmental DNA

Paul Czechowski et al.

Summary: Antarctic conservation science is important for improving Antarctic policies and understanding the changes in terrestrial Antarctic biodiversity. This study successfully predicted the distribution of Antarctic biodiversity using environmental DNA data and substrate property measurements. The results of this study will contribute to more targeted surveys and conservation measures for Antarctic biodiversity.

The Utility of Macroecological Rules for Microbial Biogeography

Jonathan R. Dickey et al.

Summary: Macroecological rules developed for plants and animals have been applied to microbial studies, but it remains unclear to what extent microorganisms follow these rules originally developed for macroorganisms. These rules are partially useful in explaining the distribution of host-associated and free-living microorganisms, especially when microorganisms and macroorganisms share the same macroecological patterns, underlying environmental drivers are also the same.

Exploring the Boundaries of Microbial Habitability in Soil

Nicholas B. Dragone et al.

Summary: The study found that while most Antarctic soils contain diverse microbial communities, some of the driest and highest elevation soils were devoid of detectable microbes. Constant exposure to cold, dry, and salty conditions has severely restricted microbial life in these environments.

Primer, Pipelines, Parameters: Issues in 16S rRNA Gene Sequencing

Isabel Abellan-Schneyder et al.

Summary: Short-amplicon 16S rRNA gene sequencing is the preferred method for studying microbiomes, but the choice of primers, databases, and bioinformatics settings significantly influence the outcomes. It is important to independently validate results generated by different primer pairs and consider the impact of database discrepancies on taxonomic assignment accuracy. Appropriate amplicon truncation, thorough testing of processing pipelines, and the use of complex mock communities are crucial for accurate microbial composition analysis.
