Toroidal vortices of light

Chenhao Wan et al.

Summary: Toroidal vortices, also known as vortex rings, are closed-loop disturbances that form a ring shape and propagate perpendicular to the plane of the ring. A photonic toroidal vortex, generated using conformal mapping, was experimentally observed and offers new insights for exploring toroidal vortices in other disciplines and potential applications in light-matter interactions and optical manipulation.

Generation of pulse trains with nonconventional temporal correlation properties

Ria Talukder et al.

Summary: We use time dependent spectral phase modulation to generate pulse trains that are partially coherent in terms of spectrum and time. By applying quadratic spectral phase modulation to Gaussian pulses, we demonstrate two types of nonuniformly correlated pulse trains. The controlled partial temporal coherence of the nonstationary fields is achieved using a pulse compressor and verified experimentally with frequency resolved optical gating (FROG). Our results show that the correlation characteristics of such pulse trains can be directly retrieved from FROG spectrograms with certain prior knowledge of the pulse train, providing a pathway for experimental confirmation of correlation induced effects in the temporal domain.

Space-time wave packets

Murat Yessenov et al.

Summary: Space-time wave packets (STWPs) are pulsed optical fields that are rigidly transported in linear media without diffraction or dispersion, and recent advances in experimental techniques have led to the discovery of novel spatiotemporally structured optical fields with surprising characteristics.

Non-spreading Bessel spatiotemporal optical vortices

Qian Cao et al.

Summary: The non-spreading nature of Bessel spatiotemporal wavepackets has been investigated both theoretically and experimentally, showing significant improvement in spatiotemporal spreading. By embedding spatiotemporal optical vortices into Bessel spatiotemporal wavepackets, transverse orbital angular momentum can be transported, creating a new type of wavepacket. Experimental results demonstrate that the spatiotemporal vortex structures can be well maintained and confined, overcoming potential obstacles for future applications.

Diffraction properties of light with transverse orbital angular momentum

Shunlin Huang et al.

Summary: This paper theoretically and experimentally studies the diffraction behaviors of spatiotemporal optical vortex (STOV), revealing its unique diffraction patterns and rules compared to conventional light. It also provides an approach for fast detection of STOVs based on their special diffraction properties, with potential applications in STOV-based optical communications.

Generating a twisted Gaussian Schell-model beam with a coherent-mode superposition

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: In this work, a simple and efficient method based on the superposition of mutually orthogonal Laguerre-Gaussian modes is demonstrated to generate twisted beams with a controllable twist phase. A smaller number of modes is required compared to pseudo-mode superposition due to the use of orthogonal coherent modes. Experimental results confirm theoretical predictions and show the potential application of twisted partially coherent beams in optical imaging and free-space optical communications.

Reproducing Kernel Hilbert spaces for wave optics: tutorial

Franco Gori et al.

Summary: This paper introduces Hilbert spaces with reproducing kernels using mathematical tools such as Fourier optics and coherence theory. It covers basic definitions of such spaces, examples illustrating different forms of inner product, rules for building RKHS, properties of those spaces, eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the reproducing kernel, integral representation, pseudomodal expansions, generalized forms of sampling, and applications of RKHS in wave optics.

Three modal decompositions of Gaussian Schell-model sources: comparative analysis

Fei Wang et al.

Summary: The study compares the equivalence and differences among three modal representation methods (CMR, PMR, RMR) for the Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) source class. Results show that for accurate reconstruction of CSD of a generic GSM source, CMR method requires superposition of the least number of modes, followed by PMR and then by RMR. The methods become equivalent with a sufficiently large number of modes, but limited to the second-order statistics of the source, while fourth-order statistics are quite different.
