Analysis of hybrid plasmon-phonon-polariton modes in hBN/graphene/hBN stacks for mid-infrared waveguiding

Pei-Yu Tu et al.

Summary: The study proposes a design approach for mid-infrared waveguides that achieve sub-diffraction field confinement and low loss using a multilayer graphene/hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) stacking and a high-refractive index nanowire. The performance of the guided mode in the waveguide is dependent on factors such as the number of graphene layers and the Fermi energy. This research not only contributes to the design of tunable and large-area photonic integrated circuits but also has the potential to be extended to other 2D materials.

Active control of micrometer plasmon propagation in suspended graphene

Hai Hu et al.

Summary: By visualizing plasmons in suspended graphene, we demonstrate the high-quality factor and long propagation length of graphene plasmons at room temperature. The height of the suspended graphene can be used as a tuning knob to control the plasmon wavelength and propagation length, enabling nanoscale energy flow modulation. This research opens up broad horizons for the application of suspended graphene plasmons in nano-photonic devices.

Topological edge states of a long-range surface plasmon polariton at the telecommunication wavelength

Ran Gladstein Gladstone et al.

Summary: This study proposes a simple plasmonic waveguide design that combines light confinement and topological photonics to achieve robust localization of long-range surface plasmon polaritons. The existence of a quantized topological invariant-based topological edge state is predicted and its excitation at telecommunication wavelength is demonstrated numerically. The strong modification of the radiative lifetime of dipole emitters by the edge state and its robustness to disorder are also shown.

Two-dimensional Dirac plasmon-polaritons in graphene, 3D topological insulator and hybrid systems

Chihun In et al.

Summary: Collective oscillations of massless particles in two-dimensional Dirac materials provide a novel approach for implementing atomically thin devices based on low-energy quasiparticle interactions. Strong confinement of nearfield distribution on the 2D surface is crucial for demonstrating extraordinary optoelectronic functions and shaping the spectral response in the mid-infrared wavelength range. This review summarizes recent works on 2D Dirac plasmon-polariton in graphene and three-dimensional topological insulator (TI), where mid-IR and terahertz radiation experience significant confinement in a deep-subwavelength scale. The findings in graphene and 3D TI reveal intense near-field interaction of 2D Dirac plasmon within highly-compressed volumes, and can potentially be applied in the development of optoelectronic biomolecular sensors, atomically thin photodetectors, and laser-driven light sources.
