Effect of stress anisotropy on deformation and particle breakage of silica sand at high-pressure compression tests

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: The effect of stress anisotropy on the compression behavior and particle breakage of silica sands was studied. Lower stress ratio led to earlier particle breakage and higher particle content showed a nonlinear increase in fractal dimension. Stress level, stress path, and input work per unit volume all influenced particle breakage in silica sands.

Summary: This paper investigates the particle breakage behaviour of carbonate sand using single-particle compression experiments and simulation methods. The results show that the strength of sand particles is influenced by the presence of intra-particle pores, with those filled having higher strength.

Particle breakage and shape analysis of calcareous sand under consolidated-undrained triaxial shear

Jianhua Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the meso-fabric characteristics of calcareous sand under undrained shear conditions. Multiple consolidated-undrained triaxial shear tests were conducted on the sand under different effective confining pressures. The results show that the shear tests transform the sand from weakening frictional strength to reinforcing cohesive strength. The relative breakage ratio and modified relative breakage index of the sand increase with increasing confining pressure, and splitting and abrasion are the main particle breakage patterns. The particle shape of the sand becomes more regular after the shear tests.

Particle breakage of granular soils: changing critical state line and constitutive modelling

Chen-Xi Tong et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the latest advances in studying the effects of soil particle breakage on soil mechanics properties and relevant constitutive models. By quantifying particle size distribution and the evolution of particle breakage, a new critical state model treating PSD as a variable is proposed. The model is validated against experimental data and compared with other constitutive models, showing satisfactory performance.

Experimental study on the mechanical behaviors and particle breakage characteristics of calcareous sand from South China Sea under repeated one-dimensional impacts

Haoran OuYang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of calcareous sand under repeated impact and finds significant differences compared to silica sand. The dynamic apparent stiffness and modulus, as well as the energy absorption capacity, of calcareous sand decrease with an increase in the number of impacts, while the opposite trend is observed for silica sand. The study also reveals that particle breakage during the impact process significantly affects the physical and mechanical properties of calcareous sand.

Chuanfeng Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of intermediate principal stress on the mechanical behavior of breakable granular materials using a DEM simulation. The results showed that increasing the intermediate principal stress initially increased and then decreased the peak shear strength, while also increasing particle breakage and the number of cracks.

Evolution of particle morphology and mode of fracture during the oedometric compression of sand

Dawa Seo et al.

Summary: This study shows that particle shape has a significant impact on the comminution and fracture processes, with rounder particles exhibiting more severe shape alterations under high compressive stress. The initial influence of particle shape diminishes at higher pressures when crushing primarily involves finer grain fractions.

Andre Fardin Rosa et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the particle-size distribution of ballast materials from different sources and its influence on behavior under loads generated by trains. The study includes particle breakage analysis, cyclic triaxial tests, morphological analyses, and Discrete Element Method simulation. The results show significant differences in the adoption of different breakage indexes and highlight the importance of parameters such as the average number of contacts per particle for predicting ballast deterioration due to breakage.

An investigation of the breakage behaviour of a pre-crushed carbonate sand under shear using X-ray micro-tomography

Zhuang Cheng et al.

Summary: The study investigates the breakage behavior of pre-crushed carbonate sand sheared in a miniature triaxial loading apparatus using high-resolution X-ray micro-tomography. Particle breakage exhibits clear localization around the shear band, with failure modes related to particle-scale characteristics such as size and shape. The experimental findings presented in this study will aid in developing and validating advanced approaches for discrete element modeling of crushable soils with realistic particle shape.

Effect of Grain Crushing on the Hydraulic Conductivity of Tailings Sand

Shubjot Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the changes in hydraulic conductivity of tailings sands under high-stress compression through experiments and theoretical models. The results show that an increase in stress from 5 to 40 MPa can cause an increase in fines content from 11% to 17%, respectively, and a reduction in hydraulic conductivity by up to one order of magnitude for the tested materials. The combination of breakage mechanics theory and hydraulic conductivity models offers reliable predictions for the evolution of the hydromechanical behavior of tailings sands under high stresses.
