Data-driven spatio-temporal analysis of consolidation for rapid reclamation

Chao Shi et al.

Summary: Rapid land reclamation is an attractive method for expanding congested coastal megacities. However, such projects often face delays and budget overruns due to unforeseen ground conditions. This study combines a unified framework with machine learning, finite element method, and Monte Carlo simulation to accurately analyze the spatio-temporal consolidation of reclaimed lands, taking into account the subsurface stratigraphy and spatial variability of soil parameters. The proposed method is applied to a real reclamation project in Hong Kong, demonstrating its ability to accurately characterize subsurface geological cross-sections and soil permeability with quantified uncertainty.

A Physics-Informed Neural Network Approach to Solution and Identification of Biharmonic Equations of Elasticity

Mohammad Vahab et al.

Summary: We explore the application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) with Airy stress functions and Fourier series in finding optimal solutions to reference biharmonic problems in elasticity and elastic plate theory. Our work demonstrates a novel application of classical analytical methods in constructing efficient neural networks with minimal parameters, which are accurate and fast in evaluation. We find that enriching the feature space with Airy stress functions can significantly improve the accuracy of PINN solutions for biharmonic PDEs.

Application of physics-informed neural networks to inverse problems in unsaturated groundwater flow

Ivan Depina et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to inverse problems in unsaturated groundwater flow. PINNs solve inverse problems by reformulating the loss function of a deep neural network to simultaneously satisfy measured values and unknown values at collocation points distributed across the problem domain. Results demonstrate that PINNs are capable of efficiently solving the inverse problem with relatively accurate approximation of the solution to the Richards equation and estimates of the van Genuchten model parameters.

A Deep Learning-Based Approach for a Numerical Investigation of Soil-Water Vertical Infiltration with Physics-Informed Neural Networks

Yuting Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, a deep learning-based approach was proposed for the numerical investigation of soil-water vertical infiltration, and a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the soil-water infiltration process in different soil types was performed. The results showed that the proposed approach had a smaller error and could obtain more accurate numerical results compared to the traditional numerical method. Additionally, it was found that medium-loam soils were less susceptible to water infiltration and were more suitable for filling artificial slopes and dams. This approach can be used for slope stability assessment under rainfall conditions and for slope stabilization measures.

Bayesian estimation of spatially varying soil parameters with spatiotemporal monitoring data

Hao-Qing Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient Bayesian method for estimating spatially varied saturated hydraulic conductivity k(s) of unsaturated soil slopes using spatiotemporal monitoring data. The accuracy of Bayesian estimation of spatial variability is improved by using later-stage monitoring data. Decreasing monitoring frequency increases errors and uncertainties in estimated k(s) fields. The estimated method is further validated with a real case study, showing agreement with borehole data, dynamic probe test results, and field monitoring data.

Physics-Informed Deep Learning for Computational Elastodynamics without Labeled Data

Summary: In this paper, a new method called Physics-Informed Neural Network (PINN) is introduced to model PDE solutions without using labeled data for computational mechanics problems. By taking displacement and stress components as DNN outputs inspired by hybrid finite element analysis, the accuracy and trainability of the network are significantly improved. A composite scheme based on multiple single DNNs is established to forcibly satisfy the initial/boundary conditions, overcoming issues related to weakly imposed conditions in traditional PINN frameworks.
