Factors controlling the spatial distribution of coseismic landslides triggered by the Mw 6.1 Ludian earthquake in China

Yu Zou et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial distribution regularity of coseismic landslides is crucial for mitigating future earthquakes. Through analyzing the distribution of landslides in the Ludian earthquake, the controlling factors were revealed. The slope gradient and the distance to the coseismic fault were identified as the two most important factors in determining the spatial distribution of coseismic disasters.

Time-dependent reliability analysis of unsaturated slopes under rapid drawdown with intelligent surrogate models

Carlotta Guardiani et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates and analyzes the stability of reservoir slopes, develops an intelligent surrogate model, and uses two machine learning algorithms to predict the relationship between geomechanical parameters and the factor of safety. The probability of failure is estimated through Monte Carlo simulations. Sensitivity analysis shows that the coefficient of variation in the effective friction angle and the correlation between effective cohesion and friction angle have the highest impact on the probability of failure.

Guocun landslide in a slate slope with dip structure on 27 March 2021 in Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, China

Fawu Wang et al.

Summary: On 27 March 2021, a landslide with a volume of approximately 2 x 10(4) m(3) occurred in Guocun Village, Tonglu County, Zhejiang Province, China. The timely road closures prevented casualties due to early detection of unusual noises by local residents. The landslide was caused by slope cutting during road construction and the intrusion of magma, resulting in the metamorphism of mudstone to easily fractured slate, which controlled the change in motion from transitional sliding to dry debris flow.

Probabilistic decoupled approach to estimate seismic rotational displacements of flexible slopes considering depth-dependent soil variability

Mao-Xin Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a probabilistic decoupled approach to evaluate the seismic rotational displacement of earth slopes exhibiting rotational failure modes. By considering the depth-dependent variability of soil parameters and properly capturing the dynamic response of slopes, this approach provides accurate slope displacement hazard curves and failure probabilities.

Bayesian estimation of spatially varying soil parameters with spatiotemporal monitoring data

Hao-Qing Yang et al.

Summary: This study presents an efficient Bayesian method for estimating spatially varied saturated hydraulic conductivity k(s) of unsaturated soil slopes using spatiotemporal monitoring data. The accuracy of Bayesian estimation of spatial variability is improved by using later-stage monitoring data. Decreasing monitoring frequency increases errors and uncertainties in estimated k(s) fields. The estimated method is further validated with a real case study, showing agreement with borehole data, dynamic probe test results, and field monitoring data.

Stochastic seismic analysis of geosynthetic-reinforced soil slopes using the probability density evolution method

Ming Peng et al.

Summary: This study conducted a stochastic seismic analysis of GRSS using PDEM, which is proven to be more accurate and efficient compared to other methods. The reinforcement length has the most substantial influence on the failure probability, with reinforcement strain increasing and slope displacement decreasing with reinforcement length.

Derivation of earthquake-induced landslide distribution using aerial photogrammetry: the January 24, 2020, Elazig (Turkey) earthquake

Gizem Karakas et al.

Summary: This study compiled a landslide inventory triggered by the Elazig earthquake in Turkey using a new approach and high-resolution digital surface models, mapping a total of 328 landslides. Analysis of the rollover effect and fractal dimension of the failures was conducted, revealing the potential of photogrammetric methods to rapidly provide high-quality landslide data after earthquakes.
