Fatigue Failure Characteristics of Sandstone Under Different Confining Pressures

Roohollah Shirani Faradonbeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the fatigue behavior of Gosford sandstone under different stress and confinement levels was comprehensively evaluated. The results showed that the fatigue threshold stress, post-peak instability, and strength weakening/hardening were significantly affected by the applied stress and confinement levels. Furthermore, an empirical model based on the classification and regression tree algorithm was proposed to estimate the peak strength variation of the sandstone.

Experimental investigation and theoretical analysis of indentations on cuboid hard rock using a conical pick under uniaxial lateral stress

Shaofeng Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of stress conditions on hard rock cuttability and proposes a theoretical model to analyze the peak cutting force (PCF) and associated factors. Experimental results and regression analyses show that rock cuttability decreases and then increases with the increase of uniaxial lateral stresses. The theoretical model, based on elastic fracture mechanics theory, accurately predicts the PCF. Finally, rock fragmentation using conical picks is successfully applied in the field mining stope to improve ore-rock cuttability by inducing high geostresses.

Assessment of rockburst risk using multivariate adaptive regression splines and deep forest model

Deping Guo et al.

Summary: In this study, a multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) model and a novel deep forest algorithm were used to predict and classify rockburst intensity with 344 worldwide rockburst cases. The t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding method (t-SNE) was utilized for visualization and dimensionality reduction, and the Gaussian mixture model was employed to determine rockburst intensity. The study showed that the proposed models have the capability to assess and forecast rockburst risk, with the most important features being sigma(theta) and sigma(c).

Energy Dissipation and Damage Evolution Characteristics of Shale under Triaxial Cyclic Loading and Unloading

Ziyun Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the energy dissipation and damage evolution characteristics of shale under triaxial cyclic loading and unloading conditions. The results show that the peak strength and peak strain of shale increase with the increase in confining pressures, while the plastic strain of rock under cyclic loading increases rapidly first, then develops steadily, and finally increases sharply with the increase in axial strain. The energy dissipation ratio-strain curve presents a spoon-shaped evolution feature. Based on the evolution of dissipated energy, a theoretical equation of shale stress-strain evolution was established.

Mechanical and Acoustic Emission (AE) Characteristics of Rocks under Biaxial Confinements

Kun Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanical characteristics and acoustic emission properties of granite, marble, and sandstone under biaxial compression tests. It shows that under biaxial confinement, the elastic moduli decrease, plasticity increases, and the biaxial compressive strength of rock initially increases then decreases with the increase of the intermediate principal stress. The study also found that the behavior of rocks under biaxial confinement is influenced by both the sigma(1) and sigma(2) stresses, and the failure modes of different rock types differ under such conditions.

Experimental Investigation of Cuttability Improvement for Hard Rock Fragmentation Using Conical Cutter

Shaofeng Wang et al.

Summary: The cuttability of rocks is influenced by stress conditions and preexisting flaws, with cuttability increasing with stress in one direction decreasing under biaxial confining stresses, while showing a decreasing trend followed by an initial increase under uniaxial confining stresses. Prefractures and boreholes can further improve rock cuttability, providing useful insights for non-explosive mechanized mining in hard rock environments.
