Drying effect on the microstructure of compacted salted silt

Zi Ying et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure evolution of compacted silt with different salinities during drying. The results show that drying leads to the development of nano-fissures, which later enlarge into micro-fissures. The presence of salt in the soil reduces the occurrence of drying-induced micro-pores due to enhanced mechanical strength and possible cementation effects.

Evaluation of swelling pressure of bentonite/claystone mixtures from pore size distribution

Zhixiong Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of bentonite on the swelling behavior of claystone mixtures. Experimental results indicate that the swelling pressure increases linearly with the dry density and bentonite fraction. Additionally, the inter-particle pore volume decreases as the bentonite fraction and dry density increase. A new method is proposed to determine the average inter-particle distance using pore size distribution, allowing for a better understanding of the relationship between macroscopic swelling behavior and microstructure features.

Neonatal digital chest radiography- should we be using additional copper filtration?

Jenna Ruth Tugwell-Allsup et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of additional copper filtration for neonatal mobile chest imaging and found that it significantly reduces radiation dose without compromising image quality. The use of 0.1-mm copper filtration was recommended.

X-Ray microtomography of mercury intruded compacted clay: An insight into the geometry of macropores

Shengyang Yuan et al.

Summary: Soil properties are closely related to the soil microstructure. Two different techniques, MIP and X-mu CT, were used to characterize the microstructure of the soil in this study. The results showed that macropores were evenly distributed within the specimens, with most of them having a non-spherical shape and an aspect ratio smaller than three.
